Photographer's Note

Photographs of severe weather have always fascinated me and often because they are sights not witnessed by the general public. Most people take shelter when severe weather approaches leaving a select few photographers to venture into the danger in order to record the event. In fact many of the most striking moments happen after the rainstorm, such as powerful cloud formations, lightning or lighting can be taken. Shooting after the rainstorm gives us better lighting as well as the sun comes back out and dramatic sunsets often follow as well and what amazing images can be captured.

This was taken at Labuanbajo from a hilltop overlooking the bay after mother nature put on a very angry heavy thunder and lightning show with rain for all to see, suddenly she ended it with the most beautiful sunset that I will never forget. I simply loved the dramatic light changes that happened during this moment and it looked very much like nature was painting the sky and the shimmering of warm light gradually illuminating on the water surface to a different scene altogether as the sunlight made a brief appearance and started to peek out slightly behind those heavy storm clouds in the distance creating such a stunning contrast.

Watching the ominous, storm clouds move swiftly out into the sea reminds me of the saying about the calm after the rainstorm. No matter how bad the storm, there is always peace and blue skies afterward. I think life is like that, and the powerful sheen seems to carry a message too, almost like mother nature is saying,
" Enjoy a beautiful calm sunset now " .....

Shooting Location:
Labuanbajo, Western tip of Flores Island, Eastern Indonesia.
