Photographer’s Note

In a city with so many desperately poor people, the ostentationous of the Buddha Bar in Jakarta doesn’t strike a particularly pleasing cord. The building though is an architectural wonder: originally built by the Dutch in 1913 as a place for leisure before becoming the Indonesian Immigration Office. The building was recently renovated at huge cost to the taxpayers – and then handed over to a bunch of rich people – including the former governor’s daughter - who set up the Jakarta Budda Bar in the building. Few of Jakarta’s residents can afford to go to the bar – many earn less than US$50 a week (about the same price as a round of drinks). But who ever said that life is fair?
