Photographer's Note

Samosir Island is in Lake Toba, a dormant volcanic caldera 1000 m above sea level in North Sumatra. It is an island within a lake on an island (Sumatra). A climb up to the centre of Samosir island reveals yet another lake, with you guessed it, another island in the centre. Prapat is the town to catch a boat to this idyllic spot. Polarized & scanned from a print. The rooves are shaped like buffalo horns, similar to the Miningkabau tribe of nearby Bukittingi. The local inhabitants were perhaps originally Moslem, but converted to Christianity under the Dutch colonialists. Ambarita is a fascinating spot to wander around.

The volcano last exploded over 75,000 years ago, to form this massive freshwater lake, & there are still hot springs & sulphur around the lake shore
