Photographer's Note

Indonesia made a significant advancement in efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labor but 30 percent of its population (220 million people) is under the age of 15 and despite the efforts child labor is very much prevalent. This 14 year old girl (pic taken in 2007) works as a construction worker in the Indian Ocean Island of Nias. Children here are exposed to grueling labor tasks, working in mines, construction and farming among other things. It was mid afternoon in Gomo, a village located in the rolling hills of central Nias as I pondered the vivid exhaustion projected in her face as she tries to carry cement blocks that is 20kg climbing while trying to walk up to her village.
