Photographer's Note

Many Torajan houses (tongkonan) boast carved designs derived from plant and animal motifs. With the buffalo being so imnportant in Torajan culture it is not surprising that often carvings represent buffaloes. The main wall poles, on the front of the tongkonan, are always decorated with stylised buffalo heads. On the top of the fašade, in the gable triangle, there are images of beetle nut and sunbursts, since some take this part of the tongkonan to represent the Heavens.
