Along the waterfront promenade at the port in Makassar are a few watering holes - not very common in a predominantly Muslim region. Like any large port, Makassar has it's share of seedier nightlife. The girls were looking into the comming sunset, and maybe looking for something else too. Makassar was the largest and most important port during the Dutch period. Now it's just a sprawling metropolis with a few attractions near the waterfront and a reputation for amazing sunsets. This bar was named Kiosk Samarang.

very nice picture, good composition, great looks and the girl in the foreground is a nice girl ;) the only flaw i can find here is this overexposed sky, but you know that ;) good stuff

nothing seedy about this pix, Caleb, despite the hard choices these young women made, or their families made for them.
It's quite a different world to be a (poor)woman in the 3rd world, and somehow, these prostitutes, though struck by fate of that sort, still show great humanity and resilience.

Hi Caleb, lovely shot of these girls, nice pose as well.
I was there in '92, and I loved the city, wide lanes with a lot of trees, reminded me a bit of the old Yokyakarta, I met some very nice people over there.
Good memories, thanks for bringing them back.

Lovely girls with happy looks. They look like they would be very nice to know and to treat with dignity. It is a shame that poverty drives a person to such a life. A great shot, nice colors and composition. Well done.

Good social-documentary shot. Sharp & well composed.

great pic caleb.. i like your choice of DOF in here and the soft light.. great sharp focus on the eyes of the first girl... I can see you spotted the local attractions of the place.. you did not even tell us her name;-)

The image of thiss young women is very sensitive! I think you captured them as real people. I particularly like the look of the girl in the foreground. She looks like she hasn't lost her dreams and hope for the future! The woman on the background looks a little hardened by life. This is a very lovely double portrait and insightful note.

Aha...and what did you do there? I like the composition...and I also like the shallow DOF. Enhances the dreamy feel.

Encore une belle image avec ces jeunes femmes, belle composition. Amicalement/jr

Your portraits always ally a great technical quality with sensibility, natural and faces expressions. It looks like you were transparent, that the woman ignored the camera. They appear in the picture like they certainly were before you arrive. That’s the most difficult I think but you do it very well.

Oooh yeah, Makassar and sleazy kios semarang... I see we have the same waterholes ;D...
I wish you had taken Kios Semarang at night with their unbelievable flashy multicolor lighting. Sailor tables were also something to shoot around 11PM with heaps of Tiger beers, I still regret I didn't bring my camera on the first night I was there.
Maybe the girl in front was too young to work there when I visited, but I think the one in the back was already there, perhaps Miss Tiger or Miss Heineken at night...
Did you taste their nasi goreng, best red wild Torajan rice I ever ate?
