Photographer’s Note

Benteng (or Fort) Rotterdam in Makassar is one of the best preserved examples of Dutch colonial architecture in Indonesia.
It was strategically located and used to control the very lucrative spice trade. This form of piracy brought the Dutch their golden age in the 17th century.
