Photographer’s Note
The old harbour of Makassar is a wonderful place (with soft afternoon light) to photograph people and the traditional wooden boats - wooden pinisi and prahu. It is a living museum of people and seafaring from all over the Indonesian archipelago.

I love the portrait but the background diminishes the image in my opinion. You manage depth of field well and the the colors at the point of focuse are fine. This is wonderful light you've found. But the green and gold and blue behind the man's handsome face simply don't work for me.
That said, welcome to TE. If this is any measure of the work you do behind the camera, I expect we'll be seeing some wonderful images from you. I look forward to what you'll share with us next.

Welcome to TE Campbell, I've been to Makassar too (only a few of us in TE it seems...) and that colorful old bugis portrait typically reminds the place.
Light is gorgeous, but I will take the opposite of Curtis' opinion with that shot. I think the backgournd pastel colours and complex patterns really compliments his shirt colors and patterns, the only exception being teh top blue line that IMho is not on the pattern rythm of the rest. I'd then suggest to crop it off, also I think a little more contrast would imporve the effectiveness.

Nice shot, I agree with Luko, the background colours and softness really make the picture for me. Adrian
