Portrait of an ethnic 'Ngada' elderly from Bena village located on the slope of Ineri Volcano 2500m elevation, in Central Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province.
Here is a more general view of a facial landscape with her deep facial characteristics showing a whole lifetime in a face. The years have clearly taken their toll on this face and full of wisdom that I really love to shoot, one of my fav and my usual genre of subject matter.
The visible pigment is a result of continuous betel chewing, a culture & tradition amongst the elderly across this remote island.
I have played a little with the shadows and highlights to bring out every single wrinkle, 210mm lens handheld and deliberately underexposed slightly to get the exposure right and beef up a light mid-tone contrast
Not a pretty face for sure but I love her expression and her glance. Just tender and sincere....

this is not a framing for a portrait that i am accustomed to see but it is very effective and highlights the way you have observed and interpreted it. A very intense presentation with superb exposure that brings out every minute detail. I think converting it out to b/w is also worth a try.
Thanks for sharing this most original picture.

this is a face where every line tells a story. Whereas my clairvoyant gypsy lady reads the lines on the palm of the hand to see the future, here we see her past. I like the close framing of this portrait as we get up close and personal. The betel juice gives us a mouth like a red gash, like a wound, yet her smile says something different.

this is indeed an excellent work!
you achieved perfectly your purpose to give emphasis on the scars of time on her face,
a really wonderful portrait!

A thoughtful portrait, your trademark. The deep lines and grey hair do speak of a long life lived, and I would guess not an easy life either. I do see that kindness you mention here too, and I also think I see a lot of sorrow in her eyes. If I had to guess, I would say this woman has seen a lot of hardship in her life. That to me makes this even more appealing as an image, real people from the real world, not perma tanned made up fakery. This is what represents the world, and this is what represents everything good about this site to me.
Thanks as always, I continue to learn and greatly appreciate your portraiture.

Interesantan tekst o narodu sa opisom ...
Dobar snimak tele-objektivom, lepo pokazano lice sa borama.
Starost brzo dodje, bore na licu, mnogo govore o zivotu zene.
An interesting article about people with a description ...
Good video tele-lens, nicely shown face with wrinkles.
Age come quickly, facial wrinkles, say a lot about a woman's life.
All the best.

Une face expressive que l'abus de betel n'a pas arrangée! Bon portrait.

Crystal clear image showing the experience of the old lady. She seems to be happy with her life at this age also. Nice composition. Good colours and contrast.
thanks for sharing.

You're capturing wll this porteait by a good macro and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see this ethnic eldery woman who has passed through the annual rings of life. The wrinkles of the frame and white hair of the frame are telling it. And, it's also impressive in a red lipstick on mouse.

Yes, a tired face of a woman who had seen and experienced a lot in her life, great portrait, full of character

Un bon cadrage serré du visage de la vielle dame, un visage ridée par le temps, ces cheveux gris, un sourire particulier que le betel chewing rend la bouche et les lèvres fort rouge!!!

Fantastic tight portrait, almost shockingly revealing! The expression, the slits of eyes, grey curly hair: what a catch! A situation where it was necessary to ask permission to shoot I guess...
mirosu (12676) 2014-05-22 6:43
Fabulous portrait. Smart choice of tight crop (close-up) to accentuate the old woman with splendid sharpness, great color contrast, superb light. Thanks to excellent light, great face details are visible.
Very well done.

I guess you did the opposite to what most other photographers do. Usually they try to hide and erase every possible wrinkle so that the final result is not even similar to the real face.
But indeed in the travel photography the older and more damaged face the better.
delpeoples (52729) 2014-06-12 4:50
Wow, what a shot and how brave you are to get so close. As you say, not pretty, but a face that is likable and mesmerising. The post production you outline is exquisite and so flawless. Brilliant composition, depth of field and skintones. But if you ever take a photo of me and exaggerate my wrinkles, I will cry :)
