A simple portrait of a Labuapi village family.
The specialty of this village on Lombok island is mask carving. You may have recently noticed in our western capitals (talking about Paris mainly) an invasion of beautiful oval shaped colourful indonesian masks, called Topeng Lombok. There are chances that most them were being carved in Labuapi.
I bought a bunch of 'em for nothing here, not that I'm a guy that bargains to death, but that's welcomed as a socializing attitude in Indonesia and also a way to improve my poor bahasa indonesia language.
With regards to this pic, the woman asked me to photo her with her baby, i didn't notice first, but the father went sneaking into the frame in the background. I think it's better like that, as the soft image of the man adds a tri dimensional sense to the pic.

Nice shot! As you say I think the man standing behind them adds a little force to the composition :-D

Beautiful shot. And, you're right, the man does add to the image. Great details, good colors and sharp as hell. Very well done.
On the other note: I've seen the masks you're talking about. A friend of mine, who travels to Indonesia on a regular basis (loves the country to death) bought a lot as well. They are incredible.

It's a very simple and strong shot. Simple because without any artificial effects, and strong because with it we share an authentic instant with all the family.

Portrait shot by a talented photograph. Technically perfect I think...
PS: Just dislike the purple frame ;-(

Beautiful skin tones and perfect DOF.As you say, it was a posed shot but the child looking off camera gives it a relaxed atmosphere.

No doubt, the expression on the father makes this photo. The three of them together are just simply lovely.

Beatiful family portrait. Perfect dof - the father is blurred, but just a little - as you wanted. Very nice framed.
I opened a few of your pictures so far and I must say that besides the photos you post excellent notes, a lot of very interesting information. Pleasure for readers!
PS I brought also a few masks from Indo. After I saw similar in the US :)

On y arrive!!!

Yeah...they really have a habit of sneaking into the frame like that. You won't believe how many people are present when I am taking most of my pictures in the slums. I really had to be quite mean at some points...not something I'm good at...not to mention, no-one takes me seriously when I do :(
I don't suppose there is any real point "critiquing" this here picture of yours because you have clearly moved on miles since.
nice frame :)
