I took this photograph at the village of Kusamba, which is located at east of Bali, near the bat cave temple and near the region Candi Dasa, Bali. This village is well-knowned as a fisherman village and also the village of salt farmer.
In the photo, you could see that the salt farmer, was watering the ground (the sand on the beach) with sea-water. This is the first step. After that, he will put the sand in a special tool inside his hut (in this photo you could see his small hut - he lives there also, at the right part of the frame) and wash it with the sea water, until it produces a salty liquid. And then, he will put it (the salty liquid) outside, under the sun-light, to dry it and.. that's how the salt came from..
If in my previous photos of this series, it was taken during sunrise, so this time I posting a photograph taken after sunrise. I just want to share with you how this salt farmer look like (as in my last 2 photos he was in silhouette), his hat, his traditional pail,...
I have to lay on the ground in order to be able to take this shot in low angle..
PS : I put the color version of this photo in workshop.
I hope you like it.

I like much the force that has this image. The wide-angle has played very well here, and also the B&W. The effort of this man at work is showed very well. We can see too his solitude, his smallness and simultaneously his nobility. Beautiful work. Thank you.

This is one hell of opicture, Raja, no ifs and buts. Your high contrast BW treatment, that lone field worker standing out against an angry sky, the black earth, just top notch work in my view. Maybe a tad too much black earth, scale wise, but that's just a question of taste...
A warm and enthusiastic bravo!

This really is something. That sweeping wide angle and the black and white conversion give this some real teeth. The splashing water on the ground again makes out what a labour this man is going through. Great stuff

You also made a great catch here using your wide angle lens. It truly gave a good perspective of the man and his surroudings. Thanks for sharing.

He didn't have any comment about the photographer lying on the ground?
Excellent photojournalism, great point of view and capture of this man's toil.
I do have to ask what sort of living he can make from this ... I don't imagine his salt will sell for a lot of money?

Such a strong image conveyed by this strong B&W treatment. Excellent POv and framing. The working man stands out so well against this dramatic sky.
priyasri_80 (363) 2006-09-04 4:42
The B&W has added beauty. TFS.

this is as amazing as it could be. fantastic low POV to get the sky. To me the monochrome and the full color versions are both superb in their own way. this shot is, infact a classic to me... something that is timeless, and when i say so, i am also worried if this attribute will carry into future !! these traditional methods of doing it are losing out to modern technology. you have an important document here.
I read your reply to Rew, i can relate myself to it, i believe it is indeed easier working on a shot if the photographer eases the subject with conversations.
Great take. Best,

This contrast and scene...

This is a first-class black-and-white image. Its drama is not apparent from the thumbnail. Great work to bring out all those tones in the sky. For me, it's what makes the image work, together with the very open composition you have achieved with the wide-angle lens. A nice depth formed by the triangle of the farmer and the barn-like structures. Another favourite of mine. Stephen

Finally you did it, I was looking silently at your Salt Framing series in Bali, waiting for THE very shot. I think this is it!
It combines the wonderful dramatic skies, the farming documentary side, plus a dynamic point of view. The whole makes it a great reportage image, I wouldn't frown to see it on a double page for A travel/nature glossy. No kidding, this is exactly what editors look for, striking images that leave room for text.
You chose the BW version but the color isn't bad either, at least on a par if not better.
I thought that the salt farms were rather in Amed region than Candi Dasa's where I've already been but didn't notice any.

what a dramatic scene under heavy sky, The wide-angle and b&w treatment give a very nice photojournalism picture.
moxon (78) 2006-09-04 9:12
Great shot with a really dramatic POV and terrific use of wide angle. I think I prefer the B&W as it turns a picturesque photo into something more--the dark tones give the scene a feeling of desolation.

Ohhh.. This is stunning. The lonely worker in the midst of a dramatic sky. The sharpness and depth are perfect. Wonderful compo Yoga.

Hi Yoga, I'm not a great fan of b+w fotography, but this one is great. Nevertheless I prefer the original coloured version with the beautiful tones. Great image,

i like a lot
CliffW (2377) 2006-09-04 12:46
I'm very impressed with this photo in either B&W or color, but I prefer the B&W, especially with the contrast levels you chose. It helps boil the scene down to it's essential elements. I like very much where you've placed the elements too. Very strong human element, with an attachment to "home" and "work", everyday themes, but with lots of drama.
AmiBe (6042) 2006-09-04 18:04
superbe compo au grand angle, tu as su rendre l'ambiance dramatique.

polter (7239) 2006-09-14 5:38
Great shot - very expressive while in BW - with the dramatic sky overhead. Great composition and wise low angle. Regards T.
