Green Terraces in Cool Air Photo

Photographer’s Note

The Balinese rice terraces go back over 2,000 years when hard-working farmers with primitive hand tools began carving the stepped terraces out of steep hill sides.

Generation after generation has extended and kept them in meticulous shape out of necessity - rice is the staple food of the islanders.

Today's individual rice terrace farmers, as did their ancestors, join a community cooperative. Each informal agricultural mini-society establishes firm regulations on a local level. This helps ensure that the limited irrigation water is fairly allocated and that only so many farmers tap into the limited-flowing water at the same time. The community cooperative also makes sure that the complex irrigation system is maintained and that a farmer does not block the water from flowing downward to rice terraces below his.

Rice terrace cooperatives are a major reason why a farmer is able to get up to three crops per year from his paddies.

Bedugul in North-Central Bali, is located at an altitude of about 1200 m (4000 ft). While climbing up to Bedugul, we encountered these terraced rice fields at the altitude of about 800 meters above the sea level. The air was clean, fresh and cool. I liked the play of the light & shadows of the clouds on the terraces and the misty hills beyond.

I love the vivid green of the rice terraces. You have composed the image well by including the horizontal band in the foreground for added depth, and by off-centering the background mountain. I didn't know that about the co-operatives, but it makes good sense. Good work.

great shot, super detail and color and you can almost feel the humidity. Your note is very informative. All that said the sunlight and shadow on the terraces makes this a really exceptionally shot, nice capture.

Olá Angshu, this is one of my favorites landscapes - Rice terraces always attract me very much because of its gracious graphism on the fields. I like very much your POV and the beautiful sunlight coming from the left. I agree with your composition, but now I'm thinking of an alternative with a crop on top, so we can almost have a this stripe of green in FG, balanced with the dark one on the top and just a piece of sky left on the right corner. Very beautiful.

the terraces of these rice fields have a pretty graphism and give a great sensation of depth while they raise by the hill.
The different green tones are very attractive, and I like the detail of the branch hanging above of the picture.

what lush greens...so well supported by the grey sky and mist, it makes them look even more humid. Rice terraces are so beautifully graphical, your composition with the superposition of layers, brings it forward.
