Photographer’s Note

Pinishi is an Indonesian schooner famous for cargo. In fact it is considered the biggest "traditional" cargo ship in the world, except they have put engine in the back since 1980s. However, the whole physical body is all made by wood. The wood is iron wood or locally called Ulin which becomes stronger when it's soak in the water.

Pinishi is also the oldest traditonal ship still existed in Indonesia. With size about 50 m long and 8 m width, Pinishi can bring tons of load and with the nowadayays engine power it may covers all parts of Indonesia fater than used to be.

The legend of Pinishi travels as far as Madagaskar in the west and Papua in the east. Even a fosil of an old boat discovered in Meksiko recently may be related to this ship.

The ship has, normally, 3 tall poles with the biggest one stands between the other 2. The back part of 2nd deck is used as the "ship controling room" while right under that for the kitchen and rooms. The total crews are about 7 - 12 people. The load is not only put on the ship but also inside, thus ensuring more cargo to carry.

In Sunda Kelapa harbour, this ship carries only wood while other parts of Indonesia with various things like plastics, dry packed food, cattle, iron bars, or else.

The origin of this ship is mostly from Makasar, south sulawesi where the etnic there is called Bugis. In Indonesia these people are wellknown as the greatest seaferers.

Nowadays, Pinishi is found almost in any big harbour in Indoensia extending from North-Sumatera in the west up to Papua in the east.
