Photographer's Note

Mt Bromo, Indonesia

There's a summit path that follows the edge of the Bromo crater all the way around. Some spots are a bit dicey - one slip and you'd find yourself tumbling into that nightmarish hole.

But there's one little bit around the far side, where you can scramble down a ridge that runs deep into the crater proper. From the end point of that ridge, you can experience the true awe and terror of the crater, in closeup, high-definition, surround-sound, pants-pooing, fidelity.

Up close, the hiss of sulphurous steam increases halfway to a roar. The mushroom clouds rising up in front of you from the cracks in the floor of the pit, are mind-blowing. It's like being in a Planet Earth documentary. Almost too real to be real.

The geography of the path and crater change over time, so you'd have to gauge for yourself whether or not it's risky to get down inside. Definitely don't try and get too close if it doesn't look safe.

This is actually a screen capture of a video I took, so the quality isn't all that great.
