Photographer’s Note
If you are flying over Java Island, it is always sensible to get a window seat. I took this photo of Raung Volcano while flying from Bali to Jakarta. Java island is covered with volcanoes. On a clear day you will see a chain of the highest volcanoes protrude like stepping stones above the clouds.
Raung is a stratovolcano with a circular summit caldera. Raung has erupted at least 57 times since 1593. Raung is one of Java's most active volcanoes. It has a 2 km wide caldera. The difference in color of the rim and the flanks of the volcanoes is caused by the rim’s lack of vegetation compared with the healthy and extensive vegetation on the flanks. Raung, standing almost 3332 meters above sea level, is the tallest volcano of this cluster.

Hi
This is a splendid photo Bernard.
Most of the pictures I took from the planes have bad quality - yours is clear and sharp.
The view you captured is breathtaking - because of the clouds around the crater it seems to be unaccessible from the earth. Thanks to your shot I can look even inside the smoking volcano.
Take care
Henryk
