Photographer's Note

Surabaya, second largest city after Jakarta is a former trading centre of the Dutch East Indies, is the capital of East Java Province. For centuries it has been one of Java's most important trading ports now Indonesia's industrial capital. The most interesting part of the city is old Surabaya (Dutch Soerabaja), a vibrant old quarters. Walk through the narrow streets packed with colorful old houses, shops, rundown warehouses amids jostling becaks-trishaws. A good place to view some of the historical landmarks, mixture of old architectural buildings featuring Dutch, Arabic and Chinese influence.

Street life has always been one of photographers' favourite subjects, and to capture people going about their daily lives and activities in cities and towns is a great challange and often these pictures extremely captivating. I think it is the mix of the urban scene with people interacting with their environments and each other that provide a colourful visual aspect to our often grey surroundings. They colour the streetscapes because they are part of the scene and so can influence our choice of composition and viewpoint.

This image was taken from a quiet street conner of Ampel in old Surabaya.
