Portrait of Hard life:
This was from my early morning photo escapade, I wandered down to the beach in Situbondo, East Java in a small fishing village. This elderly fisherman looked so tired was tucked away in his own world on the edge of the village, after spending the night for almost twelve hours out at sea. The situation got worst I was told, now the local fishermen found it harder to make a living due to a lack of fish caused by industrial fishing.
I managed to get a couple of shots using the long lens approach giving me a comfortable distance to zoom into his facial feature isolating the backgrounds at the same time.
Having an assignment often gave me the courage to go up to strangers and explained what I was doing and I found that this man was so obliging as I was pretty sure he felt that there was a purpose for me to taking shots of him. It was a great motivator to get into the thick of things and made contacts.
As usual I tried to take some kind of control and ownership of the shots even if it was making him aware that I was there.
But, doubt this shot will appeal to most people.....

It appeals to me very, a picture tells a thousand words as the old adage goes, and this face can tell a thousand tales. Rugged, and the look of almost distant concentration are really well captured. You composed the mans hat perfectly in the frame, with the full shape of the brim framing both his face and the picture perfectly.
As ever, a pleasure to view your portraits.
All the best

Remarkable portrait. I like very tight clos-ups when faces are marked.
Shadows are very well balanced and you keep the details visible. So sharpen also.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Abndsudi... This is a fabulous portrait and I admire how you have rendered the skin tone and the shadows. My instinct would have been to dodge the shadows for more visible detail, but your treatment here is perfect.

A very curious face.
Good frame and light.

this is a very interesting photo with a fine, dynamic framing by the fisherman's hat and with a cropping pushed to the limit. Although there seem to be some artificial marks and colour variations on his forehead and right eye, the power and intimacy of this portrait come through and touch the viewer very effectively. It seems that you penetrated the barrier of the long distance and came very close to his experienced face and worrying thoughts. This portrait is a captivating study that is wonderfully complemented by your note. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

I don't know what "most people" feel, but to me this portrait has a strong appeal. You bring the elderly man's face almost shockingly close, showing every wrinkle and all traces of a hard life, as well as a present that is not entirely favourable. His rather sad eyes are looking behind us, maybe towards an imagined grim future where the local poor people find less and less ways to make a living. As so many times before you have cropped the photo very tightly, meaning his face and hat cover nearly the entire frame, hiding whatever disturbing views there may have been in the background.

Un portrait où tous les stigmates de la vie se sont installés sur le visage de ce personnage.
Le rendu est tout simplement exceptionnel. Un cadrage fort bien pensé.
J'applaudis une fois encore.

This is a very good portrait indeed. The close crop really shows of the many signs of life and the light is very pleasing and there remains enough detail in the shadows to see the eyes still.
have a great weekend

Interesantan i dobar tekst ...
Lep pogled na oci koje lutaju svojim pogledom ...
Dobar rad, lepo pokazano lice.
Bore na licu, mnogo govore o teskom zivotu gospodina.
An interesting and good text ...
Nice view of the eyes that roam their views ...
Good work, beautiful face shown.
Wrinkles on the face, a lot of talk about the hard life of a gentleman.

The good note accompanying the photo, it serves both to develop it better to capture all life's behind.
Superb portrait of this old fisherman on which is engraved on his face, all the sacrifices of his hard life in the sea.
Great job, I love it.
Very good lighting, sharpness is also great.

Un autre excellent portrait pris sur le vif, naturel, le regard lointain et brillant, jeu ombre et de lumière, son visage ridés par le temps, un très beau portrait au cadrage serré

An excellent close up portrait. The lines in this man's face tell a story of hardship and hard work. Excellent use of the shallow depth of field. The skin tones and definition are impressive.
Thanks for sharing, have a lovely day

Those wrinkles are not representative of aging but that of wisdom. Older people have more value in most cultures. Awesome portrait with good details. Well done, tfs.

Yes, there are many people with a much harder life than us. We are fortunately and yet we complain. A very compelling image here that look into his face and eyes, there are so much story behind that face, many sad ones but also happy and loving one I hope, there are many poor people with hard life but they sometimes do have happier life than some of us.

COSTANTINO (44125) 2013-10-15 11:20
great capture with a perfect portrait
the success of this photo is the
expression of his face
his face express his feelings
the shadows are very well balanced

Personally I like the extreme close crop, it brings us up close and personal with this man and his lovely and interesting facial features. His hat also acts as a framing tool for his face and your use of depth of field is well done, all to accentuate his features. I like that there are the spots of light in his eyes adding that essential spark of life to your portrait.
