Photographer’s Note
Waria (woman-man) are third gender individuals in Indonesia who are considered to be neither women nor men. They are shunned in most professions although a few are TV stars and many work in hairdressing/personal beauty. Those that can’t get jobs end up as buskers and prostitutes – like these two I saw on a train just as it left the station in central Jakarta.
