There is hardly any road around Wamena, so it's hard for sick people in the villages to go to a hospital. That's why some mission organizations like Helimission and MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) are helping with medical evacuations. These flights are expensive because normally the people can't pay for it, payment depends on gifts from outside.

I was lucky to join them on a sunday afternoon flight to Sinimburu, somewhere in the lowlands. We had to evacuate an old woman to a hospital here in Wamena. It's a hard time for this people, they can't carry food or anything so they depend on family or mission organizations.
