Photographer’s Note

Located on a narrow lane in the main Jaisalmer city, Patwon ki Haveli, the five-storied mansion is the largest of its kind in Jaisalmer. The first among these havelis (actually there are 5 Havelis which constitutes Patwon ki Haveli) was commissioned and constructed in the year
1805 by Guman Chand Patwa and is the biggest and the most ostentatious. It is believed that Patwa was a rich man and was a renowned trader of his time. He could afford and thus ordered the construction of separate stories for each of his 5 sons. These were completed in the span of 50 years. All five houses were constructed in the first 60 years of the 19th century.

This picture has been taken from the second floor of the main haveli perpendicular to the narrow street below. The balconies of the two havelis, facing each other, are actually located on either side of the street & would also give the viewer an estimate, about the proximity of the havelis & the narrowness of the street.

The ornate windows & coves of the havelis are homes to dozens of pigeons. These birds are quite territorial about their perch (that’s what their living space is called). But as you see, there is surely no dearth of space in this pigeon's perch, and one which is tastefully sculpted as well.
