Taken from my journal from the day:

***

I found my way down to the riverbank and stood for a while just watching, too shy to pull out the camera and invade the scene. The water was low, and people occupied several grassy islands and islets. Three boys were trapping minuscule fish in a handkerchief, filling a cellophane bag with their catch. Brightly-clothed washerwomen beat sudsy clothes against rocks, the now-familiar slap... slap... sound echoing off the banks. Middle-aged men in loincloths soaped themselves in the weir under the bridge. Small children in varying states of undress played and bathed. A cricket match was playing out on the largest island. On the far side a man washed his autorickshaw.

I crossed a narrow channel to the nearest islet. The river was bathwater-warm around my ankles. I hovered by a group of three washerwomen, finally asking if I could take pictures. They were bemused, but agreed.

***

I was soon accosted by a group of kids requesting pictures. At one point I glanced round and this lady, no longer mindful of my presence, was taking a moment's rest from her work.

Photo cropped a little as my 18-55 lens didn't quite have enough zoom for the composition I was aiming for.

18-55 lens didn't zoom for the composition but you did well, TFS.

Hi Charlotte,

Fine document of washerwoman..
The cropping has given a detailed look at the subject and its atmosphere..
Good lights add the finishing touches... and your style of presentation is a beauty.
All the best.
