Photographer’s Note

Further west of the Gol Gumbaz, and within the fortified walls of Bijapur, can be found the Bara Kaman. Construction was possibly initiated by Adil Shah III as his own tomb (17th century). It was intended as a 12-storey building, and the top floor was to cast a shadow on the Gol Gumbaz tomb. This never happened as he died before construction could be completed. Two floors only were finished, so to speak, and all that remains is an impressive set of arches.
