Photographer’s Note
I have never been to Myanmar (Burma), but this is my pale contribution to the burmese monks fight against the dictatorship that has been rotting their country for so long now... I do hope this time they will not bend their backs like in this classroom and will stay up, and that China and India will not back the regime like it didi so many times before.. For once, the olympics might help China view things differently...?
Let's hope for a positive and peaceful issue.
This was shot in a classroom in the Likir monastery in Ladakh. You can tell the lack of financial means...they are sitting on the bare wooden floor.

breaking news from my friend Francis known as Furachan :
"Here is Breaking News from AP:
BEIJING (AP) -- China has gently urged Myanmar's military rulers to ease the strife that has seen tens of thousands take to the streets in protest, diplomats said Tuesday, even as Beijing said publicly it would stick to a hands-off approach toward its neighbor.
China has quietly shifted gears, the diplomats said, jettisoning its noninterventionist line for behind-the-scenes diplomacy. A senior Chinese official asked junta envoys this month to reconcile with opposition democratic forces. And China arranged a low-key meeting in Beijing between Myanmar and State Department envoys to discuss the release of the leading opposition figure.
For a country that has been Myanmar's staunchest diplomatic protector, largest trading partner and a leading investor, the shift is crucial. Asian and Western diplomats in Beijing and Southeast Asia said China's influence in Myanmar is second to none and could be decisive in restraining the junta from a violent confrontation with protesters.
"China has been working to convey the concerns of the international community to the Burmese government," a Western diplomat in Beijing said on condition of anonymity, citing policy. "But it could definitely do more to apply pressure."

Great composition, fantastic shot. We all pray for the burmese people! May they at last access to freedom. My temptation on a shot like this would have been to play with higher speeds to get a darker image it can give you nice results and renders the too bright areas of the picture at the right luminosity, while the rest looks intentionally darker (which can be nice on a spiritual picture like this). In any case I really love this photo.

Bonjour Eric
Un bonne photo homenage au ces braves persones qui se batent pour la liberte en Birmanie. La caputre est tres bone avec la repetition des motifs autant dans les robes rouges des moins comment dans les livres qu'ils ont.
A+

Salut Eric

Hi Eric !
I`ve been 6 times to Asia and I`m not religious but I adore these Buddist monks living with nothing than their trust and their knowlege.A good shot of these praying novices and thanks for creating your theme.
I`ll be in S.E.Asia for 7 weeks in december and january,Thailand,Cambodia and Myanmar. But know I`m thinking about to change my plans, not for safety reasons but for moral reasons.I`m not sure, what to do.The old discussion...
Some money I`ll spend, like airport tax and public transport will reach the government for sure, but on the other hand I can spend a lot of money for private accommodation, transport, food and donations,as I did last year. And I think the worst part of this tragedy is not the junta,it`s China, after their yestarday`s veto.
Best regards,Leo

Bonjour Eric

Hi Eric,
My thoughts are continuously with the people in Burma. I would hope for the peaceful outcome as well, though history has not been proving that the most likely outcome.
Greetings and thanks for your contribution in this way!
Dennis
NB: The shot is a bit soft and could have done with a bit more USM. ;-)

Beautiful little monks... with their shaved lovely heads, their red robes...
Yes, dear Eric, it's a horror what is going on in Burma. You posted this before I returned from Budapest and things haven;t turned for any better, on the contrary... what a terrible shame. But all gangsters have to fall. Good will prevail, I trust. But when?

Have a good week
