Photographer’s Note
Karjat station, enroute to Pune from Mumbai:
Here vendors from Divadkar's sell their local delicacy - the 'wadaa paav'!
Vadaa = a delicious, deep-fried, spicy potato dumpling covered in thin crust of chickpea flour.
Paav = the white bun-like bread in which the wadaa is placed to make a burger-style snack.
The vadaa-paav is an extremely popular food all over Maharashtra and parts of western India.
Divadkar's is a Karjat restaurant that has made a name for itself just selling vadaa-paavs! The red band worn by the vendor bears the name Divadkar in the Devnagri script. The snack is usually served wrapped in old newspaper.
Many passengers get-off the train just to buy a couple of these snacks, while others prefer to buy them directly from the window of the coach!
