Photographer’s Note
India's Game, with a big G.
Lots of Indians might have been disappointed and sad after India cricket team setback on 2007 World championship, early this year. They had carried out many hopes on Sachin (Tandulkar) and Sourav (Ganguly) but poorly failed on even passing the group stage : India's worst performance in the World championship.
Best cricket rival Pakistan record was even worse, loosing to weaker teams, which resulted to the strange death of their coach a few days after they lost.
Nonetheless, this is taken on Mamallapuram grounds, in front of the carved cavern temples. Although I usually don't shoot at sport games, I am a firm believer in street sports for interesting action photography.

Hi Luko,
Maybe you should do some more sports, because this one is captured at the right moment. A well thought shot with the ball cleary visable heading towards the batsman. Including the spectator on his bike creates a very nice intro the the rest of the image.
Most of your work is not my style, but this one is more the way i would make it...is that a compliment? ;-)
Have a nice weekend, Henk

It's all POV here with great depth but what anchors the shotr of course, is the all important and by now "iconic" bike in your universe... Bikes make me think of Burma, that sad and so beautiful place, eh?
I like the illusion (encouraged by the compo) that the biker and photographer are one and the same...

For me its not just the POv or the timing here that works moreover, its the spectators hands restign for a while on his handlebars, taking time out to watch the game. Thoughtful compositon Luko.

Hi Luko.
When my little son saw this, he was thrilled..he said..
"papa, that's me..batting.."
This is really interesting..
A very thoughtfull image, captured with a sensible frame..including the play and the watchers....
Congrats.

Bonjour, Luko!
This one instantly reminded me of your
"The Meek May Inherit The Earth...", but
now a different sport and a different
settings (well, and other things different).
While cricket not being 'my game', here the
placement of players and your POV create an
outstanding composition and depth to the
scene (one of your trademarks, no?).
Slightly underexposed for later working on
recovering details in shadow?

Hi Luko,
Intersting remarks in your notes. I believe its Rahul Dravid, the captian who failed to motivate on all the fronts.
Well your team is playing without any protection gears...this is how the street crickedt is played.
I too played it infront of my home in Chandigarh for many years.
A candid shot.

Hello Luko,
Wow, nice one. The ball in mid-air. Just wonderful! Yes, you should do something in sports, or gambling if you get it this right on the split second. ;-)
With the game going on and the spectator around one would forget about the temple in the background. Very nice!

Saluko!
Bon week-end!

definitely streets deliver unlimited number of photo opportunities, and those sporty action shots reveal real life of the towns and villages, real life of kids, whose the only entertainment (in numerous cases) is just a sport activity...
but now, how many of us had a chance to play the games right in the shadows of the temples? god(s) taking care for the players? or supporting one side?...
good to let us see the game "with" the bicycle-observer (seems like an oldie, this bike)...
best wishes, j.

A perfect Cricket shot against the ancient temple! The contrasting theme of the image and its style is comparable to some by (now deceased) Raghubir Singh.

I really like how you framed the action with the bike in the foreground here Luko. It really adds to the sense of place of the image, as if cricket and temples weren't enough visual clues to be going on with!
I'd have liked to have seen the moment just after the batsman struck the ball, but we can't have everything.
Good stuff.
Cheers,
Ben

Hi Luko. Mostly I like this shot quite a lot. One thing it does for sure is to show us that even with what would be considered bad light, a good shot is possible. I like the inclusion of the bike; in some ways it takes this well beyond the typical street cricket shot that is quite common from India. However, I have to admit taht becauseof the perspective of being close to the bike, the cricket game seems a little separate from me. I am not sure there is an answer; a longer lens from a more distant shooting spot would likely flatten things out too much. However, I just wish that I felt more involved in the game. Still a very nice shot overall.

Prety inventive use of the bike as a framing device here, and a shot full of iconic Indian, from temple to cricket.

Hi Luko,
Very nice daily life street scene. Taken from a good pov from the back of the field and with a very good compo. I like the bike in front and your timing. The colors and light are very nice.
Well done,

I love the way you can place so many elements in one single shot so well, Luko. Each detail is essential in this composition that creates a real sense of being there in Tamil Nadu at that game. Fantastic how this bike with the hands are so utterly close; without it, the game would lose its real interest for me as a viewer. A fine work whose real beauty to me lies in its understated complexity and intangible atmosphere.
Warmly,

Luko,
Wonderful shot i love the perspecitve the bike the kids and the timing with the batter at the top of his backswing which makes the scene a little more dramatic. Its a shame that the World Cup was such a dissapointment this year. Reminds me of playing cricket in the street with my friends. Ahh the memories!
Cheers

I can see the orange ball over the white wall. Perfect! I love these street sport shots of you. This one reminds me the other one in the back (front) of the Taj. The same feeling, the same atmosphere. This cyclist in the foreground is crucial for the success of this. At least for me. The way it places us in his/her skin watching the action is a very striking one. That's an element I have been also trying to record in my pictures as I might have already mentioned. Thanks for the class then. :) Really like this one.

Hi Luko,
This is a wonderful POV. Wonderful action captured here. Even the bal can also be well spotted. The cycle included in the frame is an extra bonus, in my opinion which gives this composition another dimension.

Well the way to my heart is a game of street cricket from India, and you've done it well here. Quite a contrast to my previous photo from Lords. Nice inclusion of the bicycle wheel, which as Darren said, excludes us from the action, but to me makes us feel like a fly on the wall and that they arent just playing for the camera.

Hello Luko
Interesting perspective,
the presence of the bycicle on the shadowy foreground ads dynamism to the photo. Light is well managed providing both a well exposed background as well as enough details in the darker foreground.

Hi Luko.
In this photo you show us a daily life scene but with different eyes. It creates a wonderful atmosphere where every one of these elements are essential (as the bike in the foreground, the buildings in the background or the boys between them).
The light is also good, and I like the effect between the light and the shadow.

Salut Luko!

one of my greatest disappointments was coming back from india with a decent cricket shot, a must for any india portfolio. perhaps because of the heat or the above mentioned poor results in the world cup there weren't as many kids playing as i expected.
a beautiful rendition this one, not only have you captured the perfect moment (it's tougher than one may think) but you managed to find a great pov and made it even more interesting with the includion of the temple and the kid with the bike. excellent details both in the sun and the shade.
you seem to be posting a lot more from southern india, did you stay there longer than in the north?
