We all dream, don't we? We dream of new apartments, a vacation, new cars, new cameras, new lenses perhaps ... but what does SHE dream of? She, an old widow, with a stick and a bag among all her worldly belongings, who does not know where her next meal will come from, who sits outside a temple hoping pilgrims will take pity upon her, what does she dream of? That look of contentment tells me she has just fulfilled one of them. An icecream stick, a huge luxury by her standard, is all she needs. How meagre ones dream can be!!

Moving picture and a moving note which makes me think how fortunate we are. Photographic very good quality with details.
snunney (80647) 2007-05-16 7:40
She certainly seems to be savouring her ice cream. The simple dreams are often the best ones. Very good portrait with her expression of delight beautifully captured. Excellent tones and sharpness.
bhorerpakhi (559) 2007-05-16 7:42
Asadharon chobi, jeno ekebare jibonto, monitor theke beriye asche. The best thing ofcourse is that look of fulfillment.
steveryan2006 (439) 2007-05-16 7:45
The contrast is the best thing in this picture. The green ice candy and her sun burnt skin tell opposite stories. The note shows the disparity between the rich n the poor. A classic you have here.
del7im (40) 2007-05-16 7:46
Beautiful shot!!! :D This is great, so great! You could win prizes with this photo!!!
nirajsinha (857) 2007-05-16 7:49
HI Sabya Da,
Very impressive picture and note too. Yes a melting ice cream is so important for her that it is like dream comes true. TE pe shayad ye pehla picture hai jisko dekh ke aankho me aasu aa gaya, rula diya. Nothing more to say...

wolf38 (31048) 2007-05-16 8:02
Hello Sabyasachi. The old woman is at the moment only busy to enjoy their water ice. Nobody really knows, about what she thinks. The photo is outstanding composed and coloured co-ordinated. One could also call it with "moments of happiness". Really very beautifully and emotional. Best regards, Wolfgang.
rajiv_077 (1412) 2007-05-16 8:05
What a amazing picture, Outstanding POV and compostion with good colours and excellent texture. The portait itself a great but you add in some fabolous moment too . Green ice cream on her hand is very intresting and very attracting. Again i would like to say, what a capture of "Great Moment".
Note is really very impressive.
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2007-05-16 8:07
Picture wonderfully composed with superb colours, contrast and sharpness. By her facial expression, the old lady seems delighted with the simple icecream. Well done.
Floydian (30970) 2007-05-16 8:08
How funny, we both post a photo of an old lady today.
Very nice face expression with the icecream she is sucking. I see some pp work, but that bothers me, i like it the way you present it here.
Nice shot...very nice.
lucasgalodoido (21051) 2007-05-16 8:12
Bela imagem da senhora se lambuzando com o sorvete! Parece ser de Kiwi! A nitidez e as cores estão excelentes!
Parabéns e Abraço!
delkoo (68) 2007-05-16 8:12
what a amazing photo, she seems to very appreciate her ice cream, i like the green colours on her dark skin and the joyful expression on her eyes.
great shot again.
barrufeto_77 (28884) 2007-05-16 8:23
Excellent colours, moment, sharpness....
Again, a masterpiece!!!
Sekhmet73 (4149) 2007-05-16 8:24
I agree with Leo, a very moving picture. But despite that, her eyes smile, I think at this moment she must have been as happy as a child with a brand new toy (and obviously it was something to eat...).
agbonavita (0) 2007-05-16 8:33
to me it is one of your most pretty portraits you have made! The woman face with her happiness with the ice cream.
The colors contrast made by the colorful fabrics and her face was wonderful.
Thanks for this moment
sebinho342 (19317) 2007-05-16 8:48
Hi Sabya, this one is a pearl !!!
No doubt that is one of your best contributions
Everything is good here, and the must is the fluo green ice cream ;)
kabe (2011) 2007-05-16 8:52
It's very good artistic photos, for composition and the good shot, for the expression and the look is nice in the colours and the scene.
indoka28 (5237) 2007-05-16 8:54
Kichu bolaar nai..!! I have watched this shot for 15 mins and now i am writing the comment...oshadharon compo.>!!the skin tone of the old lady is amazing..how did u get that...
The aesthetics behind this shot is larger than the shot itself..!! The thought which must have come into your mind while writing the note is the true identification of your soul and I respect it...
Just amazing..!!! the expressions of the lady when looked at, keeping in mind the kind of dreams we have ..will surely make any one's eyes moist.>!!!
thanks for touching TE's emotional string thru this shot..!!
criography (166) 2007-05-16 8:54
amazing moment (& now i really want an icecream ;) i like the light on her face & the green 'element' really makes the difference.

Nothing to say.

melmcree (18) 2007-05-16 9:27
What a wonderful portrait. I love the extacsy on her face from the popsicle. The little drip on the side of her mouth shows you how much she loves it. Your colors are very rich as usual and framed very nicely.
sayan (2617) 2007-05-16 9:58
What a post! Wonderful! The expression, the tone, the colours and the satisfaction on her face-exceptionally well captured! Beautiful post once again. Only part I would like to point out is the right portion of the photo. That part is a bit disturbing, since the yellow and blue colour is taking my eyes towards that. May be a crop was necessary, but then the aspect ration would be odd! So I am not very sure here.
scobert (5355) 2007-05-16 10:20
A marvelous portrait of this elderly lady enjoying her treat. In spite of her advanced age we can still the little girl's sparkle in her eyes just like the first time she enjoyed her first icecream stick. Great work!
kevinos (7393) 2007-05-16 10:29
A great subject and a moving image, Sabyasachi. A very good note too. However, it is way over saturated and contrasty for my taste. It gives it a very sharp edge. But that's just the way i see it. I think it would work better and be more moving is it were is softer , more natural, contrast. regards kevin
Cormac (26545) 2007-05-16 10:33
Wow, fantastic shot! The character in her face is amazing, and the detail in this shows everything so clearly that it is almost like being there. Good note too, really adding to the feeling of the shot. Outstanding work!

This is a wonderful portrait of this lady!
I like so much your close approach, and all the textures and colours got in this image.
The colour contrast made by the green ice cream melting and running on by her face is just so great.
I think that the inclusion of the stick and bag put the spectator into the ambient of the shot.
The way you depicted the old lady really touches me.
You had created a remarkable image from the frozen instant in the daily life of this lady.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
riclopes (35577) 2007-05-16 13:33
Olá Sabyasachi, good sensitive note and title for this outstanding portrait. Another one, I mean! What a moment you captured here. Look at those green 'tears' of joy rolling down from her mouth. Impressive quality, strong contrasts and colors. Congratulations on this one, my friend.
With greetings from Lisbon,

wowwwwwwwwww superb image, warm color, strong colors, i like really, great work
robiuk (10807) 2007-05-16 14:53
I like this one, Sabyasachi, even though
I can feel there was a lot of PP work
involved here to bring this capture to this
A surreal image with her consuming this
greenish-coloured ice cream as it is something
that's on her everyday's menu.
But it isn't, so it is a dream after all.
xavshot (69835) 2007-05-16 15:36

Hi Sabyasachi. Well I must say the colors and saturation are both amazing in this one. You've captured a real grittiness that I just love. The black background keeps our eyes on the focal point. Excellent shot Sabyasachi!
axiotea (21649) 2007-05-16 22:49
She seems to enjoy intensely her fluorescent green ice cream and I like her sweet expression, which reminds me a small girl. Nice details, colors and framing.
Have a nice day
kseng76 (144) 2007-05-17 0:24
Its got to be one of your best portraits..the dark background, the expression on her face, the melting ice-cream dripping down her cheek like a little girl, her belongings; its such a REAL shot..and as always "ekta ashaadharan" note.
3 cheers SabyaDa
Emile (20350) 2007-05-17 1:27

Very well done. TFS.
rigoletto (34231) 2007-05-17 3:44
WOW! This is for sure one of your greatest portraits, and not only a portrait of an old Indian lady. This is the portrait of desire, a powerful and hundred year old desire, caught at the happy climax! Her satisfied look, the object of desire disguised here as a fluorescent ice cream, the trickling molten drop of ice... Such a powerful image. Excellently done. Great applause for this!!!
vincz (19113) 2007-05-17 4:30
Excellent Sabyasachi! her facial expression is so well catched, about to reach nirvana! Incredible textures everywhere on the picture, your mark of fabric I would say. Wonderful contrast, sharpness. Perfect PP.
kdialyna (3148) 2007-05-17 4:58
Her eyes, my friend. An open book. Everything is writen on these eyes, feelings, dreams, wishes, satisfaction, . Amazing expression. Amazing photo. For my opinion this is one of the best portraits that I have seen .

You have surpassed youeself. This is a most amazing portrait. We can't fail to be emotionally effected by this and that surely is the mark of excellent work. The act of eating her lolly and the drip melting down her face; the expression in het yes. Wonderful work....again.

Hello sabyasachi, an image which has extraordinary piqué, it is true that in this kind of poor country, or it there with very little industry, it is clears up it and the least occasion to survive is to be seized, in my opinion that must be sad of knowing that one can nothing not make there, or if little, sincerely
ChrisJ (95136) 2007-05-17 8:55
Good portrait & daily life scene with an appropriate, philosophical note. Excellent colour lighting & dof. Tfs!

Hello Sabyasachi! I opened this yesterday when I actually was supposed to work, and you deeply touched me with this one. The photo does not need many words, it goes its own way. Nevertheless your words further help to understand what is going on. The colors are superb and strong and you can see how much she enjoys the cold sweet. Wonderful. Barbara.

Wanda1 (14980) 2007-05-18 1:08

Hello Sabyasachi, ""Mr. P" (for publisher).
Angshuman, the banker, is "Mr. B", and he has been referring to me as "Prof. A". This is another of your "homerun" portraits. The colors and texture, composition, density, and definition are superlative. The note is beautifully written as if by a successful author, rather than a publisher. But then, you are both.
Warm regards from Virginia, where we are 10 hours behind you, I believe.
Xalkida (11744) 2007-05-18 13:00

This is why already told that you are a gifted artist, because you seem to capture not only their face but their souls too. Look at her so delighted with a simple ice cream. The bit of ice cream flowing through the corner or her mouth gives the sensation that she's really delighted eating it and after this nothing else matters, her dream is realised.
As always the composition and the portrait's details are of outstanding quality.
siolaw (38080) 2007-05-19 20:40
She really seems to enjoy a simple act of eating ice cream... She has enjoyment written all over her face! Nice color tones and contrast... Great framing. She got mischievous look in her eyes.

I commend you for this poinient shot. The green dripping from her lips and her eyes say it all. This is a powerful photograph.
Angelillo (9372) 2007-05-20 15:02
Wow! This a magnificent portrait, a moment unique. One can feel the joy of this old woman, underlined, I think, by the color of the ice against the dark bacground at left. The contrasted colors are like a sign of a contrast more deep: the hard and long life, and the moments for the pleasure, for the luxury, for the dreams. However, the life goes on, and this is in some occasions sad, bui it's the real life, also present in this marvellous shot! Fantastic! Thanks. Best regards,
bostankorkulugu (41990) 2007-05-21 4:02

your shot touched me deeply. Your portraits always are inspiration for me, despite I can't make good photos of humans, but of a nature. You succeed to transfer the history and the feeling of the objects in your works and I think this is a great talent and really blessing.
Wish you all good!
Silvia from Bulgaria.
P.S Did you use HDR effect (high dynamic range) in your photography?

Sabyasachi, you are truly an amazing photographer, an artist. No need to talk about sharpness, dof, pov and the like in your photos because they are already perfect. What strikes me most is your subjects and the rare moment you manage to capture them. Looking at your work gives me goose bumps as they are so moving, so profound. I really admire you. Congrats.

I can almost taste that cool, sweet-tart flavor that the woman savors from the wonderful detail of your photo. I continue to be amazed at people's ability to find joy in difficult circumstances. You have a rare ability to capture this in the photos you share with us. I like your updated profile note; you make a greaty contribution to this community.
ben4321 (9875) 2007-06-01 13:01
Eating ice-creams is usually something that we associate with childhood, so here the fact the she is an old woman gives the image even more impact. Your right, she really looks like she's enjoying it, and I like how you caught the few dribbles escaping from her mouth.
I'm not too sure about the abrupt transition from light to the pitch darkness of the background on the left; the contrast with the bright colours in the rest of the image is a little too strong.
Nevertheless, this is a really superb character study, one of your best, Sabyasachi.
nivaldo (15415) 2007-06-03 10:30
Touching but at the same time beautiful... A beautiful portrait of a moving story...
Well done, many details and good colors.

Marvellous and tenderizing portrait. In addition to photographic qualities which are undeniable, I like much the glance of delight of this woman. The icecream must be very good. Congratulations and thank you for this beautiful work.
With all my friendships fo France,

Wow, this is amazing!. This portrait, together with Henk's today's post, are one of the best ever seen.
This picture would be good with or w/o PP. If you can, could you post the orginal as a WS?
I'll be back for :-) (done)

Your works every day are better and I am always surprised when I observe these portraits, this image is impressive, full of force and a great naturalness, the control of the light is perfect and creates contrasts and perfect textures. Congratulations and thanks to share.

Superb portrait!The expression is perfect!
I love the colors, the lighting, the composition and the details!
euryan (8438) 2007-06-21 0:10
Darkening the left half of the frame was a genius move. It makes the woman and the bright colors stand out really well. The expression on her face is priceless. The color of the icecream against her skin is wonderful. I really love this shot. Well done. This is my favorite shot of yours, and you have some great ones.

What shall I add, to all what's been written about this great capture.
So many stories can be read on that great face !
Very well done my dear friend in India.
TFS and my warmest regards from İstanbul
capthaddock (28790) 2007-06-25 11:28
Great timing Sabya, outstanding portrait, what does it for me is the strange radioactive colour of the popsicle, and the traces oozing down her cheeks.
daddo (23104) 2007-06-26 4:56
Namaste Sabyasachi. A powerful reminder of the stark inequalities in the world, in the lottery of life. The expression is priceless- a little bit of Nirvana in the here and now. Exceptional details, great mastery of loght. Regards. Klaudio.
avis2avis (4264) 2007-06-28 8:45
Very nice one. A good note too. Couldn' help but notice the bunch of keys tied to the piece of cloth next to her ear. Makes one wonder what secret dreams she has kept locked up somewhere.
cepekdong (3676) 2007-07-03 8:48
amazing sharpness and amazing expression in her face
lucinka (9976) 2007-07-05 9:24
Hello Sabyasachi, you are one of the best people photographers here on TE and this is such a wonderful shot, it particularly stands out with your note that make us think about different world than ours. I'll be adding you to my favorites to learn more from you. Lucie

KevRyan (22952) 2007-07-08 5:11
An absolutely stunning image Sabyasachi - the relationship to your model is wonderful and her uninhibited enjoyment of that ice lolly perfectly captured - a pin point high quality pic with excellent colour rendition.
best wishes Kev

Every single portrait that you have in your gallery is way of expressing oneself and bunch of feelings...this one is the best one I have ever seen in my life!!
the ice cream which flow from her lips is just perfect and her smile and happiness is so nice..

If I were to give away this year's Grand Pix prize for a photo, it would have been this photo of yours. I salute to thee, Savya da. With single stroke, you became my favourite. I won't log out of TE without looking for a new photo from you.
robertosalguero (246) 2007-07-15 22:08
Pictures like this one open my eyes to the situation that many people suffer around the world. Poverty is a disease that should be eliminated once and for all. I also wonder what she was thinking as she enjoyed the popsicle under the heat of India. A beautiful picture with a very emotive theme. Thanks Sabyasachi.
ballaln (406) 2007-07-20 23:59
This is such an amazing picture, very moving! I liked the colors of the skin? Would appreciate if you can let me know the technique you use for portraits.
I had a look at your gallery and other picutres and they are awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Look at that expression! When have you last seen bliss like that? When have you felt that way when eating an ice cream she sure knows things we don't. A wonderful timeless picture conveying a simple wisdom of the ages..
SampraS (619) 2007-09-02 12:15

avista (0) 2007-09-12 6:48
I have seen all your pictures and i find them (exept few) verry sadly. Quality is perfect but ideas are terrible sick. If the only matter to you is points is ok ....but i am sure that india is not hell and have own Prettiness.
I will never more see your pictures ....
sagar (2410) 2007-10-14 7:14
I'm not going to say that its a real good one, you've heard that many a times before. I would just say that you brought tears to these eyes!!!Not a joke, its true.I know this woman, and sometimes given her alms, but never found her face lit up with such a divine ecstacy. This is really touching!!!
I would say the people who see this shot as reresentation of the Indian poor are mere dumbs(with due respect to their freedom of commenting),as they fail to preceive the divine light that is in the face of this woman.
meb (766) 2007-11-15 3:18
I'm sure you don't need points! You are reporting what you see around you, this is something we call "life", and it is unfortunately not the same for all of us. This picture is amazing for its perfection, but it is also moving, it tells us something, it teaches us something new (or never really understood before). I think this is one reason to post here: look at what it is outside.
Mistral (15402) 2007-11-15 14:45
no need to say nothing more...
Just marvelous shot with a story back...
A smile (and straight to my fav's!)

As I am going to India november this year I just let me explore Your folio with India shots - It is very impressive!
fotonick66 (1420) 2008-08-12 2:31
that's one of the best TE image ever!!!
No words for that! Just great!
swarnab0 (3) 2008-09-02 21:16
reminds me of Indir Thakrun of Pather Panchali! The harsh green colour of the icecream makes a striking contrast with her rugged ebony skin. The icecream symbolizes the luxurious India, a fad of the rich; and this character represents the poverty stricken basic India. The two colours cannot balance each other, since it's impossible to dream of such a harmony. Hence, the harsh contrast! Awesome, man!
zesopol (258) 2008-11-05 12:11
You have a very good eye Sab. Congratulations!

ajayrawat (605) 2009-05-13 7:36
Great photo with such a brilliant subject. I like the way you have caught colors in the frame whereas in Indian society widows are debaared to have colors in life, I like the fact that the icecream she is having is also richly colored.
Your photo scores full marks on technical and content front.
akh (277) 2010-02-23 22:23
What an amazing portrait is it. It makes you feel her so deeply. Techically it's amazingly charp and well composed with verynice color of that ice cream.
Piece of Art in my point of view.

Ciao dear Sabyasachi,
I have looked at the your unbelievable gallery, and I have to tell you that you are really an excellent photographer. It's really difficult to choose a photo to comment, because they are all very beautiful ones, true masterpieces, especially the portraits, captured with marvelous intensity. With your photos you capture the soul of the people, their expression shows their moment of life. Today I have chosen this meaningful portrait, perhaps a portrait of daily life, but surely an intense and pleasant portrait. Sincere congratulations!
Ciao, have a nice day!
