Photographer’s Note

just for people to see what a naga procession looks like from the inside. the procession moves on to sangam for the shahi snan (royal bath) on 2-3 auspicious days ever kumbh. it is supposed to be a very rare sight.

Great B&W shot, you catch a good expression. bad luck that the guy rising his arms has his face hidden but good shot anyway.

Oh that'S a KILLER shot, Sohrab. I'm so glad to see uploading with some regularity, man. This is straight out of some epic movie by Eisenstein, you know? These pilgrims, faces coated with paint of all kinds, pushing forward, exulting, suffering even. POWERFUL stuff, this one jumps right out at you.

Hi Sohrab,
I was there in Ardh Kumbh but since it was not during the Shahi Snan I couldn't catch this. Never easy getting this close to the Naga Sanyasis, they are known to get violent at times. The ash smeared body, varied expression on their faces truly makes this such a stunning image. Ofcourse nothing less is expected from you:)

Amazing shot of the shahi snan..!! the sadhus, the ash and the procession are all looking great with a mind blowing treatment givin to the pic by you..

I see that only one sadhu is actually looking at you so have just tried to highlight him through an audacious WS..!! do let me know how you like it..!!

Hi Sohrab,
I remember writing describing one of your ealier Naga photo as tribal and almost primitive. I can't help having the same feeling here. All this flesh, the arms in the air, the hairs etc... And once again, this wonderful B&W.
You present it with a documentary side, but it's very artsy too!

Excellent, excellent, Sorhab... Epic, yes that's the exact feeling Francis pointed. You made a very clear to read shot from an undescriptible mess, very good timing with the armraiser too.
Are they members of the broken or the unbroken yet team ;D ...? I believe not.. as in any crowd there's someone who appears like he shouldn't be there.

Hello sohrab. Back to the origins. This applies both to the motive as well as to the b&W picture. The motive works thereby archaic and abstractly. Everything reduces to the substantial. The picture also also outstanding composes. Very worth seeing. Best regards Wolfgang.

The black and white was necessary.
We see the people in something else than a daily life photo.
Fashions or customs, but what is sure: a lesson about photography and about forangein cultures.

This is a strong image, I am going to part company with the others here for my enthusiasm on this particular shot. I was struck by its impact when I first saw it through my pda a few hours ago. But when I opened it on a standard monitor I fail to be as impressed as I was before.

Why? I think it is more 'cosmetic' than it could have been...it looks like a standard lens shot (though I may be wrong in this), a perhaps because of this there is a somewhat flattening of the perspective, less depth and drama...there is less of the 'epic' quality that Francis and Luko speak of, which I definitely saw in your previous post, than I would have imagined possible in this environment. Then the sky line, those telephone poles are real spoiler...perhaps you would have done well to squat (and risk getting trampled, but look you don't get such a holy opportunity every day) to avoid those ugly posts.

On the whole a terrific image, yet I seem to come away with a little bit of desire left unfulfilled.

there is so much energy here , and your position push us at the heart of the action.
You’ve got some amazing faces reinforced by a good BW.

Epic, I agree. I am going to disagree with my friend Animesh, think the wires in the backgrounds are of no importance at all, and definetely don't degrade the image.
For me this pic is like a travel within poeple's soul, I am looking into eyes of each on one of them, the expressions are so different, strange and probably frightening.
This is a masterpiece.

Ahhh, the raised arms...they are the photo. Such a defining point between the lower half of the photo and the top half.
Just below his right arm...the man with the closed eyes...I mean, what a face..he looks as if he has reached the end. It is textures and contrasts.

Hi Sohrab - I agree with Thomas about the guy raising his arms - the picture loses something by not seeing him...it works on other levels though so not a disaster ...i find the darker tonal areas/shadow detail to be very muddy and dense which works in some ways and not in others....I'm a little distracted by the things sticking out of the mans's head too - unaviodable without a lower position which may not have been too possible.

Interesting subject though...and the way they are engaging with the camera.

Been thinking about the impacts of working with digital in black and white after our last dialogue via e-mail......I can see a more hybrid approach does creep in.....interesting in itslef but it does move one's eye for black and white somewhere else....I'll work with this during the coming year.

nice image Sohrab, you were right in the middle of things, your print could be better i think, but it is still quite nice, I dislike the way you dodged the face of the guy on the right - too obvious dodging. and the lower part lacks of contrast. nice work, congrats on the exibition again
