Photographer’s Note

These two little desert nomad girls are tough as nails! The concentration shows on their faces. They ar going to pose for the tourist and then, with robot-like precision their hands are going to shoot out, asking for alms...

Shot somewhere on the road between Jaipur and Mandawar in Rajastan, I had just a split second before I was parting with a couple of rupees for these fine young ladies.

When I think of India, I think of people washing themselves in the Ganges, or sherpas leaping up mountains in Nepal. On a visit to the Indian subcontinent my eyes were opened to so many other, non-stereotypical aspects of life in India, including the fact that there are desert nomads there, much like one would expect to encounter in North Africa.

As spectacular as this shot came out - it's just daily life for them. In fact I wonder if they are even real desert nomads at all - Maybe they just life right here and lay in wait for tourist buses to pass by. Well they sure looked authentic to us at the time...

Technically, nothing remarkable, really. Pointed and clicked with my Pentax autofocus camera. No tripod or filters or flash. Scanned. Cropped. Resized. No pp. Two girls. One heck of a picture.
