Photographer’s Note

Now I'm on my way to Hundar, the first village from the Nubra valley. You'll find such cute girls taking the goats in fields. This cutie, I clicked from my vehicle, as soon as I saw she picked the baby goat. You may see little motion in the picture.

The Nubra Valley was first opened to outsiders in 1994 and remains a restricted area. Fertile green villages stand out in the desert-like environment along the Nubra and Shayok rivers which flow in the wide valley floor formed by the Karakoram Mountains to the north and the Ladakh Range to the south. This valley was on a major branch of the ancient silk route between Leh and Yarkland.

In the days of yore, the fertile Valley of Nubra formed a part of the overland route between Tibet and Turkestan. Once dotted with garlands of camel and yak caravans, this Silk Route glen is also known as the ‘Valley of Flowers’ of Ladakh, and is amongst the greenest valleys in the region, ideal for your holiday break.

Here there is a small population of Bactrain camels, shaggy double-humped animals, which in the old days, were used as pack animals on the Central Asian trade routes. During the past 50 years, they have been bred for transport purposes in Nubra; today visitors can take a camel safari out into the dunes from Hundar.
