The Menhirs of Paang Photo

Photographer’s Note

The menhirs of Paang stand in this windswept gully...sentinels of an ageing Himalaya. Above begins the immense flat of the Morey Plain. Extending back from this point for 54 kms the Morey is home to an amazing people...the nomads of Rupshu.
The river below gets its colour from the immense quantities of potassium permanganate dissolved in it.

At an altitude of 4800 mtrs its cold and inhospitable for most of the year.

Thank you for sharing an image from a part of the world where I doubt I well ever get the chance to travel. The image is great with the strong vertical aspect giving it strength and power.

A mind-boggling image of this strange geological formation, Vijay.
I can imagine the grand scale of it by looking at the river below and the edge of the flat plain above it.
Did you take this picture in the course of the Himalayan car rally, by the way? Just curious.

Hi Vijay,
This lanscape has so many intriguing elements, and your framing pays homage to each distinct layer: from the mineral-rich water that looks unreal to the rock outcropppings on the cliffside, from the flat plain-like surface as it rises to new heights. The shadows from the clouds add a special dimension. You've really extracted all that you can from this beautiful and dramatic scenery.
