All along the bank of river Ganges, you can see several ghats and a mixture of different architecture styles. That is happening because every region of India (and Nepal) has its own ghat, which is built following every region's architecture style. At some point what cathes the visitor's attention is a mosque (Alagmir Mosque)that seems "out of frame". It was built in the site of a large Vishnu temple by Mungal Emperor Aurangzeb, who destroyed and looted many Hindu temples. Even today a mosque right beside the holy river of hinduists (and also bhuddists) causes many problems, and that's why the presence of the police in this "neighborhood" is "tenacious"

It is a nice photo and a great note. India is an amazing place and every time I see this kind of photos I think that I have to go and visit that fabulous country. Coming back to the photo, I like the colours and the POV. However, I think it is very slightly tilted to the left and I would crop a bit of the river. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Back once again Hercules with a great shot showing life around the globe. Excellent note. Your image has loads of depth and interest. The colours are really nice and I'm sure reflect the true scene that was before you. I've done a workshop to suggest a minor crop and level adjust, but it will have to wait until tomorrow for posting :-)

Greetings from Shetland

That place is really magic . Your idea and composition flawless with a great opened angle that includes a rich panoramica . Perfect balance in that picture and i wonder how the result it would be if you had increased sharpness levels . surely amazing !
Nice day !!

Iassou Hercules,
A good note with that nice compo...I like to see the mixture of the different styles of architecture and especially that mosquee...POV, light and colors are good too...
Have a nice day,
Marilyn

Hi Hercules,
This is a nice view of the Ganges, the ghats (just learned what they are thanks to your note), and the mosque!
Thanks for sharing,
Raluca

Hola Hercules.

Bonita vista.

Hello Hercules, very nice "sandwich shot" :) However i would crop a bit on the bottom to make river Ganges look little smaller, but thats just my taste :) A magic place, India, and also a magic picture with perfect colours.

good post and an interesting note. this is common around in India, and harmony prevails more oftern than tension.

Hi Hercules,
That mosque (Alamgir mosque as you rightly pointed out) is as much a part of Varanasi skyline as is the Dasaswamedh Ghat or the Viswanath Temple. I think this picture does not portray any tension but signifies the coexistence of two beautiful religions. Shooting on the ghats of Varanasi is any photographer's delight. I would however suggest from personal experience to take a boat early in the morning and cruise along the ghats, shooting using the early sun rays.

Hello Hercules,

You show us a very beautiful picture with in foreground the river and background the buildings with Mosque, but I give a advice, try the picture cropped to left side, so that you get a square format, so you get a better composition.
Thanks a lot,

Best regards,
John.

Hi Hercules,
interesting place and view. Good composition with mosque near Ganges and good reportage also. I like it.

Bonne compo, Hercules ! C'est impressionnant, les premières maisons sur les rives qui sont de la même couleur que l'eau. Le contraste me plait avec les maisons supérieures et le ciel.

Hi Hercules..
You well know that Vanarasi has a strong muslim communiy i guess, but they mostly dont stay in thes areas of town!
A good POV there and nice colors too, nice framing as well

HI Hercules
Another familiar place to me. I like the warmth of this shot and the details you have captured. The river Ganges is crowded with buildings along its shoreline, especially in Varanasi and you have shown this well. Good colours and nice exposure. Good work.
Aubrey

Exellent and very original POV on this famous ghats of benares
Very impressive. Beautiful, I like.

Hi Hercules,
An interesting note. And a beautiful picture too. Let me mention that though there may be occasional tensions between the two religions, but mostly there is a brotherly coexistence of the two! Those religions are in the heart of Indian culture and they like to coexist with the respect to other religions.

Sayan

It is really unfortunate that you are commenting the mosque in a very derogatory manner.

We have this mosque built in the medeivel periods when many old structures gave way to create new ones. I think the same might have happened elsewhere in this world.

Your story of many temples looted and destroyed by Aurangzeb is incorrect and it seems that you have very biased views about Islam & Indian Architecture......
