I think I took this photo at Thikse Monastery, near Leh, which is in Little Tibet (Ladakh). I first went there in 1992, for a very short visit of only 3 days. In 2001, I was able to spend 2 weeks there, trekking and revisiting monasteries. And there was a profound cultural change that took place between the two visits. In 1992, the majority of monks either shied away from cameras or were fascinated by them, but in 2001, they were eager to have their photograph taken, and decked out in designer trainers and sun glasses. Save from the designer clothes, this young monk was keen to be my subject.

Hi Fiona, this photo is really lovely, and the comment you included gave me a good insight to his land. i thought it very amusing how you noted the change in the monks, and that they had become more prepared for having their images recorded. i love the colours in this photo, and the boys open smile as he happily poses for you. thank you very much for sharing. ciao
