Photographer’s Note
the growing refugee problem is a serious threat to calcutta. everyday thousands of villagers from Bangladesh cross the border and come to calcutta in the hope of a better life. they settle anywhere and everywhere, where the police or civilised people like us dont bother them. areas beside railtracks are one such places. this picture captures the belongings of a family. i was walking near the Circular Rail tracks beside the ganga when these three chulhas(earthen ovens) stopped me. extremely dangerous way to live but we human beings are the most adaptable creatures. which is why we survived so far.
i froze when i saw new born babies sleeping beside the tracks. the ultimate will to live. a lesson for all of us

Hi Arnab
Another thought provking story and photo. Is it an abandoned track.I see black polythene on left perhaps it is their residential area.
Chulas in Bengal are different. In North India it has wide openinig for wood.
Thanks for sharing

Very Stark and very real..
Like the heavy contrast in the image.. is the best medium to portray your strong story.
Well captured.
