Photographer’s Note
This time I would like to mention about the Music instruments used by Kathakali. The main instruments used are Chenda (a drum played with sticks) Maddalam (a drum played with fingers), Chengila (Gong) and Ilathalam (Cymbals). Drumming forms a very integral part of Kathakali and the Chenda has a very special place in the performances. The artists are capable of producing a range of sounds varying from the gentle rustle of dry leaves in a breeze to deep, rumbling thunder on the Chenda. Imagine the huge variety of sound generated from just this one instrument--it's like magic!
