Etikoppaka is a small village with a population of around 12000, situated at a distance of about 65 km South of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, India. While the main occupation of the people of Etikoppaka is farming, more than 200 people of the village are artisans. Their livelihood revolves round manufacturing of distinctive toys, artifacts, curios and novelties from wood and lacquer called Etikoppaka products.
These artefacts are made of wood and coloured with natural dyes harvested from roots, leaves, fruit, seeds, bark and lacquer. The wood generally used is soft ‘White Ivory’ (Wrightia tinctoria) and has a very fine grain. Women and children gather the wood from nearby hills of the Eastern Ghats and leave it to dry in their courtyards for seasoning. This being a cottage industry, each artisan works in his own little hut, still using the primitive tools that his forefathers had used. They are rich in colour and are a feast to the eyes. No synthetic dyes or material are used in these products in any form thus making them safe even for babies.
The process of making these wooden handicrafts is known as Turned Wood Lacquer Craft; or ‘Tharini’. Lac is a colourless resinous secretion of a number of species of insects. Vegetable dyes are introduced to the lac through the process of oxidation. The end product of this process is the richly coloured lacquer.
I have added as a Workshop a photo of one such artefact.

J'aime beaucoup cette scène de la vie quotidienne chez ce travailleur du bois. Il faut bien avouer que son équipement est très rudimentaire, mais cela semble faire le travail.

An excellent informative and educational note, really well written. I love to learn about such things, and you have posted this with a superb accompanying image to show the master craftsman hard at work. Nice that some examples of his work like scattered around, their vivid colors being very eye catching among the wood shavings. Original and fascinating post, thank you again.

It is refreshing to know that such traditional occupations and methods are still being used. As you say, these materials are safe, even for the smallest hands!
The artisan is well placed and acts as a guide to the tools and the materials. WE have good details of his occupation.
Sadly, the w/s is not live, so we cannot see the finished product, which would have been equally interesting.
My warm regards,

a capture that's very natural and straightforward and really interesting due to the abundant information it contains. There's much to study in this workshop about the procedure of the craftwork, and the working conditions. In spite of your closeness, the craftsman is concentrated on his work, the elevated point of view is comprehensive and doesn't disturb him. The lighting, the colours and the textures are absolutely natural too. Since you have access to places like this, I believe you could try more artistic compositions too. I hope this interests you and the craftsmen give their consent:) Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Hi Satya, This close up shot of the toy maker is really wonderfully taken with nice POV. You have captured his expression well and he is only interested in fabricating the toys and nothing else. Great light and colours with amazing details and clarity. Warm regards

Hello Satya, So many interesting details here. Haha, the old radio with casettes recorder, the young generation probably do not know what it is. And mobile , of course, always handy. And always interesting to see the man at work. I like it.
