After three photos from a tour by boat in Kerala in southern India I jump across the country to the Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir state in the remote north.
This photo is almost 30 years old, so it is possible that this very typical Ladakhi hat has gone out of fashion since then, since in 1985 I mainly saw it worn by slightly older women. I hope not, because the saleswomen wearing this kind of hat certainly adorned the streets of Leh, the main city, and created many tempting photo opportunities.
As usual I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide. You can see a larger version here.

a very natural and authentic street scene. I like how you placed the produce in the foreground and included two different groups of people, expanding the interest. We get cultural information and the ladies' attitudes are very intriguing too. I like very much the interaction of the three elderly ladies, I wonder if two of them are customers or just helping their friend. You've included a superb juxtaposition with the girls in the background, who seem concerned with other things. The warmth of the colours is very pleasant, as always. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

it is a shame in a way when modern life pushes away the traditional clothing, architecture or even life style. I hope there are still some places where one can witness a scene like that. The women selling vegetables on the street in Laddakhi outfit would draw my attention too. It is unusual and actually quite pretty for working clothes. I like how you caught her weighing some cauliflower on this simple scale. The vegetables in the foreground create very good focal point and the other women in the background add to the scene.
Great quality picture in all terms.
TFS and all the best!

Complimenti
Ciao e buona serata

Hello dear friend
here we are again with a new photo
yours is almost 30 years old and
may be out of fashion but has a great
interest and tradition
in my opinion tradition is always tradition
and modern life must follow the forgotten
traditions and civilasation s elements
have a nice day

These ladies haven't put on their traditional attire for some festivity. No, this is a daily life-scene on the market.
Well composed with the vegetables and the fruit in the bottom left corner.
The power of this photograph is that none of these women seemed to be aware of your presence.
You've captured a beautiful, spontaneous behavior.
Best regards, Paul

Another good old picture at the traditional open market where richness of colors and vivid detail make this daily life shot attractive with very engaging characters popping up within the surroundings. Fleeting moment well grabbed keeping the main interest sharp in focus combined by attractive props. The women in the know sure to cheer up this capture, a place with the feel of the local atmosphere and flavour. Indeed a fascinating everyday life scene I love to capture too. Congrats

A very good scanned photo, nice scene with ladies selling fresh vegetables, very well spotted and captured

This is a beautiful DL shot with these elderly Ladakhi ladies from the market. I was so mesmerised by the beauty of the land that I went on shooting the mountains, the rivers and the lakes and sadly do not have a DL shot as good as yours from this place. I like the traditional attire on these women. You are correct it is hard to spot such traditional dress on the streets, but can be seen on festivals and monasteries. Good moment captured with the interaction between the buyer and the seller. Excellent shot, thanks for sharing.

Good morning Gert
When I saw this image in thumbnail format it immediately grabbed my attention because of these traditional hats. Enlarged, it's even more interesting to see details of the merchandise in the foreground and the two ladies in the background. Looks like they are gossiping and it makes me wonder if they were talking about the photographer taking shots of the market stall. I'm sure they did not imagine someone will be looking at their image 30 years later, wondering what they were talking about.

Back to the old time with balance, but the clothing is real specially with these old picture of almost thirty year old.
An excellent composition, a lovely presentation too.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice weekend,

You're capturing well this daily life by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle which the elderly seller who wears traditional/ethnic clothes and hat is selling vegetables/fruits to customer by using the balance at roadside. It seems to simple market in daily life, however she is a convenient merchant for local residents.

Hello dear Gert,
Another very nice "oldie" of those Ladakhi women on their market stand. Good pov and layout. But my favorite in this compo are those two chatting girls at left !
TFS and have a nice weekend

A very curious scene from daily life.
I like frame and colors.
carlo62 (26884) 2014-04-04 15:36
la foto contiene ancora la frescezza del momento, non sembra assolutamente siano trascorsi 30 anni.
Splendida scena e fantastici i cappelli delle due donne intente nel loro traffico commerciale.

Very nice scene in this street. Lovely and natural colors.

I just love the hats, especially the black one, it's like a wizard's hat without the peak. Pity about the oe on the cauliflowers but it really doesn't matter as this is such a delightful image. I like the composition with the strong group of three women and then two more in the bg. I hope they are still wearing these hats too!
eldancer1 (24761) 2014-04-05 15:03
This must be in northern India, their clothes look different but beautifully decorated. This photo might be 30 years old but I don't know how much their lives has changed since you took this. Nice capture of the daily life of people. Well done, tfs.
jcpix (11044) 2014-04-05 20:03
After having just mentioned in a note of my own regarding vendor sales being performed with weights and measures, this is a treat to see following in the same detail....just a different country though. :) A terrific depiction of life on the streets, literally. This is a great compilation of women, each one with a different expression, and even contrast. The three main figures at work, while the two younger ladies in the background appear to be less involved. Love the tradition and history represented here, and for the pictures age itself...the scan is just as good as your others. Without any of these women looking at your lens, it's all very natural and organic. Enjoy the new day ahead. All the best.
mirosu (12288) 2014-04-06 0:10
Excellent daily life snapshot from street vegi market. The women are fully concentrated on their activity.
When I was a child, scales of this type were very common on the market places.
I always admire your scanning quality.
Very well done.
Wish you a nice Sunday.
SnapRJW (28909) 2014-04-06 6:06
Hello Gert - The first thing I noticed besides the distinctive clothing worn by the ladies is their coral and turquoise jewelery. I saw pieces like this in Bhutan and treated myself to a bracelet.
The quality of this scan is very good, excellent sharpness and detailing but best of all I love the subject.... shopping, something we all do but I can say for certain that our vegetables are not as fresh as these.
boa (5536) 2014-04-06 11:02
Snyggt!

Hi Gert, It is true that the hat of this sale woman would have made me click my camera. The original scale is leading me back to my childhood stage as I remember every time my mother brought me along to the market for food. Excellent colours and clarity even though it is a 30 years old picture. Thank for sharing
Royaldevon (25898) 2014-04-06 14:13
I become more and more convinced of the importance of such photographs as a record of traditions that are being swallowed up by the movement of progress! This is a delightful shot and one that has scanned particularly well. The trio of ladies makes a lovely, intimate focal point, as they watch the scales with great concentration. I, also, just love the little tete-a-tete that is occurring in the b/g. It creates a strong contrast between age and youth!
My warm regards,
chrislo (4149) 2014-04-06 14:23
A very nice high quality scan and an interesting market scene. I really like how you've captured the interaction between the ladies in their traditional working dress with their expressive faces. The women seem completly unaware of your presence which explains why their pose is so natural. Nothing pretentious here, just real people in an authentic market, a great photograph that captured the moment wonderfully. Very well done.
photographer_sg (2542) 2014-04-07 10:32
another beautiful daily life shot of great spontaneity. The head gear is no doubt gorgeous and the varying expressions of the three ladies makes a fine composition. The two young girls having a conversation make anothet very interesting point of interest.
Thanks for sharing and have a great new week ahead.

Another nice photo from your archive with the interesting market scene, I suppose that not much has changed there. Anyway, I saw the scale like this many years later too. Amazing hats worn by old ladies.
Warm regards from Tbilisi
nikkitta (12788) 2014-04-09 14:04
Interesting note, hope some places in the world can keep traditions, clothes, food, away from oxidental culture and not only remember them in noisy festivals
Like this scene, better.. three, the vegetals at the front, the busy sellers and the gossiping girls at the back
Noticed same wooden door as in Nepal, quite close they ate
Enjoy the colorful necklaces and impressive hats
yquem46 (38378) 2014-04-11 9:18
The ladies in the streets of Leh were still like these ones when i was there 3 years ago, selling their veg and apricots directly from the sidewalks
A beautiful timeless testimony
best regards, have a nice we
Tigerlily (2855) 2014-04-17 8:46
They are lovely hat:-)..How boring the world would be if everybody worn the designer's hats and carried the designer's bags.. The colour of the cloths is beautiful, I like the rich colour, especially the woman on the right. Two younger ones made a perfect background. Apart from all these, you see, how interesting the scale is,,,
subhendu_bagchi (25111) 2014-04-21 4:09
This is another masterpiece from you. Great daily life composition with those local ladies selling cabbage. Perfect light and soothing colours. A very good one. Tfs.

Sorry been away and was still busy when I'm back. I missed a few of your wonderful scan image. I like this one with the lively market scene, focusing in on these ladies on their task of buying and selling. the costume suggest they are from tibetan area. The vegetabel are wonderful in colors. Really good quality for a scan.
serp2000 (37517) 2014-07-02 7:17
After your Polish tour I 'd like to come back in your Indian folder. Very very interesting scene and their traditional clothes remind me the people from Tibet. I am not an expert but I think they have got a lot of common culture, clothes etc.
