This is a picture of the Shyok River taken from a very high cliff.
The word Shyok means 'River of Death' in Yarkandi language. It is a tributary of the mighty Indus river and originates from a part of the famous Siachen Glacier which has the distinction of being the highest battlefield in the world. It originates in Indian territory but crosses the border and enters Pakistan to meet River Indus near the town of Skardu.
Along with the Nubra River the Shyok is the only source of water for Ladakhi people living in Nubra and Diskit. The parts of the valley closer to these rivers are green and agriculture is possible. But inner reaches of the valley beyond Hundar is mainly a High altitude desert.
Thanks for visiting.

What a view! From the thumbnail, I had no idea what this actually was, and expected a sheet of blue plastic on the ground, but what a joy to click in and find this vibrant blue river working its way through the snow covered ground. And the whole scene is sandwiched perfectly between the forest and the rise into the mountains. Those tiny trees down there give a perfect sense of scale.
Very unusual and very cool shot, thanks as always

quelle iamge quelle vague de rivière bleu et ces traces cet effet de l'eau sueprbe avec le fond blanc quel ensemble sur-réaliste et merveilleuse.
Bravo et amitié

Very interesting shot, and note to go with it. It looks almost like an abstract pattern rather than a landscape photograph. I think that's partly because I'm struggling a bit to get a sense of scale here. Are those trees down by the water's edge? Is that a track through the snow on the far bank? Intriguing.

What a beautiful pov on this great landscape, wonderfull blue tones, well captured, good contrast, tfs.

This is a strange view of astonishing colours and shapes. The partly frozen turquoise river has created a fantastic pattern. Unless I had been told I was looking at a natural scenery I could have taken this for an abstract paininting. I like it in any case.

Ah, it is an amazing frame Subho! The way you composed it, is unique... very artistic. We have seen so many beautiful shots of Ladakh in the internet, but this one is the most unusual I have seen. Thanks for sharing it with a very good note.
Ei shot analyze kara jayna. Asadharan.

It looks like waters fed by glaciers have this lovely turquoise tinge. This is a lovely photo of grand scenery. You have mentioned this highest battlefield in the world before, now I am really curious. If you haven't explained before, you'll need to tell us about it. If you have, please direct me to that note.

Interesting photo, without your informative note I'd problem to identify the content. In BG it looks like an avalanche stopped by the river. (?). Nicely captured.

Namaskar dear Subho
This is wonderful, almost like an abstract painting. The icy blue tones are sensational and I just love the textures here. Excellent contrast between texture and colour. The tight framing has worked to great effect. Well done.
Have a happy day

wow, what a nice river it is! Nicely captured. The colour of the water is just superb. This picture has some parts overexposed, such as the white parts of lands. Otherwise I enjoyed this emerald green river a lot. Excellent framing. Tfs.

your imaginative use of the long lens has enabled us to view a most spectacular scene, aided by an equally interesting note this is a fine example of the area and its environment.
A simply stunning travel photograph.
Best regards Les.

A nice take from high pov of vast landscape, i like the layers of diff colours and textures with potential abstract quality. Love to view how green is sandwiched in between and the snowy back drop increase the depth. The patch of foreground vegetation give some indication as to the scale of the valley. Well done shot, Congrats

I like this high POV very much, this riverbed is originally formed, fantastic colors and light
pierrefonds (65796) 2014-01-20 12:46
The wideness of the area is giving depth to the scene. The point of view is showing the variation of the colours of the river. There is a good contrast between the colours of the snow and the colours of the river. Have a nice day.

Oh, a wonderful POV from up high, as if you are not high enough up on the plateau, you take us higher with the bird eye view. I can feel the cold wind and the short ness of breath just looking at this iamge. Love the turquoise river flowing between the snowy landscape. Maybe just really white sand but looks like snow. Fantastic shot regardless.
timecapturer (49288) 2014-01-21 2:19
fascinating shot this. I love the contrast of vegetation and snow split by the blue waters of the river. It looks like an amazing place and an original piece of imagery

Merveilleux spectacle de la nature, fantastique la couleur de la rivière avec la glace, bon cadrage ,très belle présentation
Kamilutka (8105) 2014-01-23 3:08
there are many nice pictures in Your gallery, but this one is very special. The color of the river is absolutely stunning and it is additionally highlighted by contrasting surroundings. Very good proportions given to the composition and very good focus.
Thanks for sharing

a very intriguing composition of colours and textures, the fluid lines make an attractive random network in your frame. At first, it looks like an abstract painting but then textures emerge as natural and the lines and colours begin to draw a landscape. A sense of vast scale is gradually perceived by the viewer and this landscape seems eerie and fascinating. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
nikkitta (17066) 2014-01-23 18:04
Must confess that at first view seems like an abstact paint, after reading note and more , your answers, I can fully appreciated the composition with the glacier as main protagonist between trees and mountains
Great place to be and impresive photo, good TE contribution, congrats!
PS What stupid way to waste money, but this happens all over the world
jcpix (13916) 2014-01-23 19:11
From this vantage point and composition, this almost looks to be more of an abstract type of image. Had it not been for your note, it would have taken me some time to figure out exactly what I'm seeing. :) The rhythmic turquoise colors set between the colorful foreground landscape and the snow covered backdrop is somewhat surreal. A fascinating combination effect, and the layering of elements is sublime. This is a smart arrangement, the visual "trickery" makes for a fun and exciting picture where there is otherwise no motion or focal point. Bright, colorful and well achieved. Great work! Enjoy the day ahead.
Angshu (56750) 2014-01-23 23:40
I have quite interesting pictures of the Shyok, but surrounded by brown rocks and not by white snow. Snow in October is a bit strange especially becasue Nubra is not at a very high altitide.
The graphic effect is nice created by the glacier melted turquoise waters of the Shyok
Miguel82 (27674) 2014-01-24 8:52
I have almost the same picture but I didn't get the turquoise hues of Shyok river Subho, in October snow is already visible, it's a really good record taken during your visit of Nubra valley, all the best, see you!
