This is the dangerous cliff hugging road to Roghi village, 8 kms. away from Kalpa town. I briefly mentioned about this road in my picture on Roghi village posted a few weeks ago. The road is just 2-3 meters wide and there is barely enough space for a SUV to pass. Rockfall, landslides and avalanches during winter makes it all the more dangerous. If two vehicles come face to face on this road, one has to backtrack ( convention is that the descending vehicle retraces) to a bend where the two can pass each other separated by a few inches!!
This point is called the 'SUICIDE POINT', because according to my driver people have committed suicide in the past jumping from this cliff. Though this point is the most dramatic, I wonder why they chose this point because on any point on this 8 km stretch if any one jumps from the cliff, nothing can save him/her. A very painful way to die.
While returning from the village I took this shot. I waited for around half an hour for a vehicle to arrive from around the corner, but alas none came by. I felt that would have made the photo all the more dramatic. My driver was not eager to wait as there is constant danger of rockfall. So I had to do with this shot.
There is a daily bus service from the district town of Rekong Peo to the Roghi village. Almighty knows how that bus passes this stretch, because the wheels of the SUV I was travelling in, were just on the edge of the road not an inch more or less!!
Thanks for passing by this road if you can call it so!

Hello Subho, Woooow, certainly it is not a road for me. I would be dead of fear even if not fallen down the cliffs. No need to wait for another car. It is VERY dramatic as it is. Amazing road. I admire you were so brave. I have seen similar shots from Bolivia but now one can go there only in one direction(depending on the day of the week) but I wouldn't go either :) Thanks for sharing.
Warm regrads MAlgo

Whoaaa... now thats a dizzying scene :) As I look at this image on my laptop, I focus on the road, and then scroll down. And down and down....Your composition has created the perfect sense of depth for this place, and it does genuinely send a shiver down my spine to think of driving here, especially having to reverse uphill around bends here! Amazing. You captured the spirit of this place perfectly, car or no car in the scene, this is very dramatic and very well done.
Thanks as always

Nice but dangerous place.
Nice afternoon and all the best.

Good Morning Subho,
What a place!
What a place to drive!
My mind wanders to people who made this road!
I would imagine your 30 mins wait is indicative of the number of people who use this road. It is certainly not for the faint-hearted!
The photograph is magnificent, giving a wonderful impression of the terrain, the textures, the dangers all with a great sense of depth.

What a pov chosen! Awesome!
Your photo really creates a chilling effect... a fear of falling creeps in. A truly vertigo-arousing shot with wonderful details and colors.
With best wishes,

A superb capture of this road and the tremendous vertical rock face fall, just look at the picture with me and gives me vertigo, sensational details and textures of rocks.
Very good color in natural tones.
Magnificent .... both brightness and sharpness.
Well captured. I Like
All the best to you.

This spectacular dose of vertigo site - a majestic view closeup will leave me speechless for it looks perilous as you drive on the edge of the cliff. Doubtless this must be most rewarding adventure you had but this looks a long way more to go! Even though there's no scale reference it looks wonderful the way you've caught it, but on the minus side i feel that the soft background is slightly over exposed. Nevertheless it's a fine effort and probably once in a life time journey there! Congrats

This is indeed a scary and narrow road of Kinnaur, so wild and beautiful part of Hp I didn't visit yet, now I imagine the polar temperatures there, a brillant picture Subho, merry christmas

that's a terrifying cliff.. but a beauty it is! Lovely picture in soft colors and great detail. Great light too.
Thanks and best Christmas wishes!

great, good place chosen to be shown us the road carved into the rock!

All I can say is "Wow! Better you than me!" Just looking at the photo makes my head spin. Well seen and rendered. Merry Christmas to you, too!
fabbs99 (17133) 2013-12-24 22:01
It looks really terrifying. But having the experience of driving on Darjeeling roads including Pankahbari,I can tell you that driving in the hills is real fun provided you maintain traffic discipline, focus and concentration. TFS.

Une vue fantastique , impressionnant détails des roches, excellente présentation
Joyeux Noel a vous et votre famille

Scary! My hired suv skidded on the early morning ice on the road down from Darj and that was bad enough! This precipice is well captured and you can almost feel the wind and the chilly presence of the ghosts of the suicide victims. Good sharpness and framing. Merry Xmas!
nikkitta (17066) 2013-12-25 11:42
Wowwwww, good note about this road, same happens in some places of the North of Argentina, same convention about who must go back
What a place to stop , but what a place to take a photo with great vertical format, obvious you don t suffer from vertigo
Well done, enjoy reading and watching
jhm (151446) 2013-12-26 4:04
I think that these road not is for everyone, very dangerous not a road for me .
Your composition has created the perfect sense of depth for this place.
Excellent composition, nice presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
ourania (44318) 2013-12-26 8:05
this is absolutely breathtaking! Although I've passed from narrow winding roads on mountainsides in Greece and Cyprus, this one looks too scary and exciting. You've captured this extremely dangerous curve from a very effective point of view, the sense of height is very well rendered. I also like how the sharp, rugged textures fill the frame and how far and vertiginous the distant slope looks too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
Waylim (25502) 2013-12-26 12:02
This view makes me weak in the knees. I would rather not know that I'm on this road, the rock formation don't look very stable either with the fill on the cliff and no much barrier on the edge either.
Excellent photo to depict the dangerous condition of the road. The vertical format enhances the height of the cliff. Glad you are back safely.
COSTANTINO (64198) 2013-12-26 23:34
breathtaking and spectacular view
to this dangereous cliff hugging
road original version
nice contrast between
lights and shadows
Mics (936) 2013-12-27 1:51
Just looking at this photo, there is some adrenaline rushing to my body already. But while the rock formation may look unstable, the road looks quite paved, and it comes to my mind that this road is frequently used by travelers despite the risk. This one is for sure not for the faint at heart. Great risky shot!
Didi (60588) 2013-12-27 11:00
Terrific place, I feel a vertigo
Very good point of view
I have done a WS to give less lights on the right part
holmertz (51180) 2013-12-28 7:07
I thought I had already commented on this picture. I saw it the other day and almost got scared just thinking of travelling that road. There were a few parts on the Srinagar - Leh road that were quite horrible, where many passengers kept their eyes closed, but the drivers actually seemd rather careful. Unfortunately that is not always the case on Indian roads. This is a great shot and I understand your eagerness to have a car included. Too bad you waited in vain.
pierrefonds (65276) 2013-12-28 17:02
The tight frame is putting the montain in evidence. The point of view is showing the détails, the colors of the road and of the mountain. The good luminosity is giving nice tints to the colors. Have a nice day.
mirosu (16041) 2013-12-29 8:51
After very long journey and even longer after-journey recovery I’m again able to view and comment all the beautiful TE photographs.
Excellent rocks close-up photo with very well balanced colors, perfect light, very good clarity. Superb rock details & textures. The well-chosen tight crop eliminates all unwanted distractions. Well done.
Wish you and your family a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year.
SWISS ALPS ROADS
Angshu (56750) 2013-12-30 6:09
I remember this road well...in fact to picture the sheer fall, I lay down stomach down and took a shot of the river flowing far below. I heard this stretch is also considered as one of the most dangerous road stretches in the world..and I surely know why!
You have pictured the vertical drop well which gives us the sense of height thanks to the vertical framing
macjake (67038) 2014-01-01 21:28
there's an easy answer as to why so many of us here on TE are enjoying this shot....how often do you get to see a road like this!!
totally insane! I've been on some similar roads in Peru, but this really wins the prize.
dramatic and nerve racking even just thinking about it!
great post for TE!!!!
be safe :)
jcpix (13914) 2014-01-08 16:14
Are you kidding me, is this for real? Yikes! Well, safe to say you'll never see me anywhere close to this road! :) I get a sense of vertigo just looking at this on my monitor...I wouldn't even want to walk along this stretch. You've done a great job in conveying the idea of height and danger with this wise use of the vertical composition. Wow, I'm amazed anyone would willingly drive this route.
Good separation of front and back, aiding in the depth perception. A dramatic perspective indeed. Thanks for sharing this information, so I now know where NOT to visit. haha
Enjoy the day ahead.
jmdias (63412) 2014-01-10 4:55
interesting place, the dangerous passage is impressive. I thought suicide was a not so important element for indian people because the religion believes that says there are other lives to live ahead. According with Hinduism these people won't be punished in the other life ?
