Back in time again, to 1988 to be precise, and back to the scanned Kodachrome slides.
This is from Fort Kochi, the old part of Kochi, a major city on the southwestern coast of India in the state of Kerala. It's a historically very interesting city and nowadays a major tourist site. This is where Vasco da Gama died and where he was buried for a few years until his body was sent back to Portugal. His gravestone is still kept here.
Kochi (earlier known as Cochin) also used to have a fairly large Jewish community and the synagogue was still open at the time of my visit, serving a remaining congregation of 27 persons. I don't know if it is still functioning,
As you can see in this photo Fort Kochi was an area of partly very idyllic streets with small houses and a friendly and easygoing atmosphere. There were not terribly many tourists in those days and a foreigner with a camera was no doubt the event of the day. When I took this photo only the goat didn't stop to watch me - apart from a few persons too far away to notice what was going on.
The quality of this photo is not the very best. Please remember that it's a scan, and that it's 25 years old.
You can see a larger version here. I added a workshop taken a short moment later, when I got closer to the onlookers. Unfortunately it is cropped in this version, and in the beta version I can't see the thumbnail, only when clicking at "comparison". Depending on your browser you may be able to see it at full size by right-clicking and opening in in a new window.

Hello dear Gert !
First time that I see a photoshy goat !!
Really marvellous the title and this "oldie" from Kochi .
I do not have any objections on it's quality as I still am a fan of those slides of Kodak or Agfa !
By the way, I was recently in Germany and bought me a good slidescanner. Cross your fingers, I shall soon start to scan the great mass of about 60.000 slides !
Hopefully I shall bring this job to an end still during my lifetime :-)
TFS and best regards

I returned to Trekearth after a long time to be greeted by your superb composition. Wonderful details of the people and the children and of course the goat which holds the composition together. Thanks for sharing this old jewel.

Hello Gert - There is a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere here and I love the way everyone is paying attention to what you are doing. This must have been before the time when foreign visitors were commonplace. Looking at your WS, I am struck by how proudly the small boy is standing with his straight back and straight arms. Times change..... Warm regards and TFS this wonderful shot from yesteryear. Rosemary

Hi Gert, Funny title, indeed, all were observing the man with a camera. But it happened to me also in later time. I was in Kochi and I was in this Synagogue in 2004, so it probably is still functioning. I will later try to find a photo. Fantastic shot. I remember Kochi as a bit more "civilised".
It was funny there, it is not (or was not allowed) to sell alcohol there, so they brought a beer in a jug. I like the colours and the composition very much.

thats a very well documented pic with a fantastic note to give a perfect perspective.love the pov and how everyone is staring at you,and of course the fact that it was shot 25 years ago.
mcmtanyel (16741) 2013-12-18 20:10
Excellent composition, great light management and nice job of scanning. Yes, all the people in the foreground are gawking at you. The goat is so scrawny that maybe it was embarrassed to show its face.
PaulVDV (24435) 2013-12-18 20:12
You were indeed getting a lot of attention. But everyone laughs very friendly with the exception of that antisocial goat.
The picture is an interesting document of this neighborhood brimming with folklore.
Best regards, Paul

Jolies couleurs. Bien fait.

A beautiful picture and an excellent note. I like both. And I admire your passion towards these photos, you kept these quite well although it was taken a long time back. Excellent, I salute you.

This scene could be from my old country, the Philippines, today. Very nice capture of this rural scene with good lighting and sharp details. Very well done, tfs.

I like very much this trip to place and time, daily life is described in a most interesting way through details and textures, though a comprehensive, clear glimpse on the village and its inhabitants. The people are friendly and have established a great connection with the viewers through you and your lens. The large version takes us into the street and gives us the impression we can move around and greet the people. The light makes the atmosphere so merry. I like the intimacy created by the light and the friendly and curious people. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

It would appear that your presence has created quite a stir in this sleepy backwater,I wonder if the reaction would be the same today.
The colours and quality of the original slide have transferred very well onto this digital version, with very good clarity.
There are a lot of interesting features to browse and enjoy in this most attractive shot.
Kind regards Les.

Why are you hiding from us this interesting photo so long long years??? Funny title, very interesting note. I have read about an visit of the Israel delegation to this Jewish community few years ago. It was very amazing report.
And Vasco da Gama was just a terrible and bloody European conqistador for the local people. But it is another story.
Waylim (25368) 2013-12-19 22:34
Very funny shot, yes, all the people are very curious about your presence only the goat is turning it's behind on you. Excellent daily life image form small village with dirt road and rundown houses.
Good scan quality of an image from years gone by.
mirosu (15302) 2013-12-19 23:37
First of all many thanks for posting this photo. I was in FK several times, last time during last October. I don't know from which part this excellent photo is, but I'm sure there are many changes in FK between 1988 and now. I like the composition with the children and typical small houses, nice rural mood. Considering scanning, the quality is excellent. Well done.
jhm (144328) 2013-12-20 5:39
Almost not to see that you used a slide.
This must be very extraordinarily, for to make a stroll in these villages, almost not to believe.
Indeed the goat has no interest in the photographer.
Your picture is very sharp and clear with the much details.
These picture is made with good view about these area.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice weekend,
batalay (36994) 2013-12-20 7:13
Of all your photos, I look forward most to the scanned Kodachrome slides. There is a timeless qualities to them and I know they are from past decades (this one is almost 26 years old). The goat, probably seeing himself as another a typical creature in the crowd, is wandering through the dirt street, feeling safe and happy. The slide appears slightly bleached by sunlight, but it is full of life, and reveals a daily slice of life unchanged for hundreds of years.
Happy Holidays, Gert,
Subhogen (4067) 2013-12-20 8:41
Nice view of a Kochi slum.
A photo that is 25 years old WOW! this has antique value. Perhaps the slum is not there now, some rich industrialist has bought the land and built some high-rise building, but your photo has survived all these years..that is great to see. And going by the quality of the photo, I must say you take good care of your photos. Very well done and thanks for sharing.
Graal (100166) 2013-12-20 13:08
another interesting photo from your archive. Good presentation of daily life in Kerala. Good quality of scan. Also well complementary photograph in WS.
Have a nice evening.

another superb one from your daily life shot. I like the activities of those people in your shot. Very good light and sharp details. Really enjoyable one. Tfs.
abmdsudi (46980) 2013-12-21 7:57
Another oldie and scanned image, its wonderful slice of life and there's so much for the viewer to see around with excellent addition of happy looking people and the goat. It's good that you were there to record this shot and share with us - unsure whether this village still exists today. Excellent lighting bringing out the surround and the woman in particular very well. A happy image indeed with those humble villagers. Congrats
nikkitta (16862) 2013-12-21 9:52
Funny and explicative title of the street scene taken place 25 years ago
Exellent scannned of a charming capture where everybody in concious and smiling at your presence, not easy to obtain
And the goat going, the touch of humor, perfect for the end of the year
Cute boy and girl at the WS, the smiling woman....
Greetings and waiting for more scanned captures from India

smart title my friend! perfect start to the photo!
there's at least 7 or 8 people taking a good look at ya :)
its fun and interesting taking a look at the village lifestyle, or perhaps this is considered a town/city...don't want to mis-credit them :)
that little boy and little girl in the middle are the cutest aren't they!
another great post for TE.
enjoy your day!

Hi Gert, A 25 years of this picture, I guess when the moment you scanned this picture, it brought back a lot of memories of your trip to India. I know that the animals are free to wander in city too. Am I right?
The people in this village seemed very friendly and the kids are curious seeing western people with this big toy(camera) in his hands. Thank very much for sharing your memories with us and Merry Christmas
annjackman (20931) 2013-12-22 10:02
I always enjoy your scans of far away places before digital photography became popular. This is a very interesting street scene with several elements typical of India. The small children seen interested in you even if the goat wasn't! A lovely image to view - well done.
Kind Regards, Ann
kato (11630) 2013-12-22 18:04
You're capturing well this village by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the idyllic spectacle with dirt road, friendly residents and tasteful houses. It' also impressive in the spectacle in which the washing is hung out to dry in front of the house and id surrounded by rich greenery. And, the shadow projected to the road draws out a good effect. It's good/friendly portrait for WS.
adores (41086) 2013-12-23 18:11
Another great daily scene from the old days! Seems that they are enjoying your presence and the goat is perfect in foreground. Funny that the boys's clothes really take us to the old days. I like this one a lot, I want to visit this region some day!
Wish you a Merry Christmas!
Miguel82 (26543) 2013-12-25 8:43
A little street in Old Kochi Gert, very authentic capture showing the life in the village, a goat is roaming there, the people didn't look disturb by your presence and are smiling, I like the blue sky and the houses with tiles, all the best, warm regards
Vasa (16816) 2013-12-30 16:19
I like this large view and many details for long exploration. The kids are big boys today, like you Gert. Have the best creation in 2014, my friend! With admiration for your generous work!
fanni (14381) 2014-01-05 12:51
this is really a curious photo many interesting details of which stir imagination and make you wonder... :) Excellent capture of the moment! and, of course, the goat is the 'gem' of the whole story :))
UlfE (14641) 2014-01-07 10:00
jcpix (13816) 2014-01-17 22:00
It would certainly appear that you were the center of attention, as everyone is looking in your direction. The title alone made me smile and want to take a closer look, it's definitely one that stands out from the crowd. :)
Yet another fine quality scan from long ago, whatever your equipment or method, it sure does a great job in bringing out much of the detail and color. I wouldn't be the least bit concerned with the image quality, it's the content which is far more interesting and telling. I really enjoy these older photos, there's always a good nostalgic quality, even if I'm only seeing places through other peoples eyes. It makes me wonder how much has changed since they were taken.
As you stated, this does look like it would be a friendly place to visit, full of curiosity and smiles. Thanks for the trip back in time. Enjoy the weekend.
