Once my high school history teacher asked if we had seen rivers. He was a man who had been to places and he had seen the big things in other places. He said the Imphal River was just a canal. We all had a good laugh. It was more than a decade ago. But the river, no matter how sullen and small, has been a part of kanglei civilization; a river which had been feeding lives from time immemorable ; a river ingrained in the memories of people like me.
