‘Jodi tor dak shune keu na ashe tobe ekla cholo re' this is the opening line of a famous Bengali song written by Bengali Nobel laureate poet, dramatist, composer and novelist Rabindranath Tagore. Translated it means 'If nobody comes forth hearing your call, go on alone'. That's exactly what I felt when I took this photo.
One monsoon afternoon in the sea side town of Digha I was looking for photo opportunities. This little kid was part of a huge Marwari family and had come along with his parents and grandparents. He was pleading with his father to take him nearer to the sea. But nobody from his family wanted to go any nearer to the sea because the weather was closing in and the sea was really choppy. They were busy talking and sipping coconut water.
This little boy may be just 5-6 years old, took this opportunity and walked towards the sea. It was clear from his expressions that he was seeing the sea for the first time in his short life and was in complete awe with its vastness. As the wave came in the kid fell down and was drenched but he did not panic. He stood up and was enjoying the moment. I took this shot as he was getting up from the fall and was balancing himself.
But it was getting too close for comfort so one of my friends alerted the family, who rushed towards him and rescued him. They scolded him for being mischievous and spoiled all his fun.
As for the choice of B&W…being monsoon season everything around was grey and there was nothing much to speak about color. So I thought of converting this to B&W and liked the result.
Thanks for your time.

great title this for a compelling and original shot. Love the use of B&W here it is both effective and artistic. A shot this is timed to perfection. Well done!

You have captured this moment of the boy with the ocean very well. Good conversion to B&W.
I am not sure what conversion process you used but I am aware that there are many ways to produce B&W from colour.

A tiny boy and a huge sea, this here is a kind of minimalist photos, this is a capture of emotions of a short moment

Good perspective, good catch.
BW has been very effective to emphasize the whiteness of the foam. And vertical format is of course a wise decision.
A very well-composed shot.

a nice scene and story captured with great timing. I like very much the way the little boy stands out against the very luminous, dynamic surf. His unstable posture looks so intriguing against the suggestive and powerful movement of the sea. I'm glad his parents picked him up but sorry they scolded him. I think that this scene looks superb in black and white, I don't miss colours at all. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

as I live on a small island, it sometimes escapes me that some people live so far away from the sea that it could be a first time to see it, and you have done a wonderful job in capturing this childs wonder at seeing it for the fist time. A great title too, man versus sea. I know who I would bet on :)
thanks as always

Une jolie histoire, touchante de ce petit bonhomme voyant la mer pour la première fois, j'aime la scène avec la vague venant sur lui, belle version en N/N

A lovely scene with that boy discovering the sea for the first time. I like the sense of movement you have in this shot, with the foamy white waves adding a dynamic feel. I also like the spontaneity of the moment and the situation where the young boy is mesmerized by the sea. The black and white also gives it an artistic quality. Well done.

Excellent monochrome photo, the white foaming water creates nice contrast, the child adds nice life to the scene. (Would be nice to place the child more to the left). Well done.

I'm always drawn to monochrome images, so I had to stop at this one. It works very well, and I like the balanced, near-symmetrical composition. The problem is the noise in the sky. I note that Subhendu has commented on this too and you explained that the gloomy conditions meant that you had to use a high ISO setting. Maybe not quite so high! Or maybe you could smooth out the noise in Photoshop or similar. But a nice one nevertheless.

Oh, that youthful exuberance and inexperience of life, yeah? :) Love the title chosen for this shot, it really does carry that association succinctly, especially combined with your note describing the situation. I do like the black & white treatment here, it feels to enhance the emotion of the moment. Always a treat to witness the sea for the first time, would loved to have seen his facial expression, but this still gives us a good idea of the trepidation and wonderment. Great concept and approach to this opportunity. Glad there were no problems due to the conditions and this young man was able to enjoy the waters. Have a nice day ahead.

beautiful and very evocative image!
I like your title and of course the scene, which impersonates your apt title.
Finally the scene itself-just the boy against the vastness of the Ocean and your perfect monochrome treatment. For me-Superb!

hi subho. i love the monochrome treatment and your square crop, while centered composition also works quite well, paticularly in this photo. i like the high iso grains, which add a timeless feeling to the result, just like an old photo.

I liked the version in black and white. the silhouette of the child is perfect to make a contrast with the ocean, creating a sense of life and movement. I would like to crop this image in another way, letting the child a little more at side, far from the central part of the compo. anyway a beautiful job.
hugs and a happy 2014
