On the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901, Lord Curzon, who was then Viceroy of India, placed before the public the question of setting up a fitting memorial to the Queen. He suggested that the most suitable memorial would be a "stately", spacious, monumental and grand building surrounded by an exquisite garden. This was to be a historical museum where people could see before them pictures and statues of men who played a prominent part in the history of this country and develop a pride in their past building, while the work of construction was entrusted to Messrs. Martin & Co. of Calcutta. Vincent J. Esch was the superintending architect. The total cost of construction of this monument amounted to one crore, five lakhs of rupees, and was entirely derived from their "voluntary" subscriptions. Sir William Emerson, President of the British Institute of Architects, designed and drew up the plan of this history.
36 year old Thomas Daniell and his nephew William, aged 16, sailed out from Gravesend in April 1785, destined for the East where they were to spend the next eight years. Of humble origins, they arrived in Calcutta via China early in seventeen eighty-six, looking for wealthy patrons, and to explore the sublime, the exotic and the picturesque country. The Victoria Memorial has the largest collection of the works by the two Daniells.

Hello Arunava - While I think the shot has merit I do think that perhaps the processing is not quite right. The details in the beautiful memorial are good but perhaps a little over-sharpened and the contrast with the sky is just a little too overstated for my taste. I would try and soften the shot down a little and I hope you don't mind but I have done a little WS for you. Have a good Sunday. Best wishes Rosemary

A most interesting note to accompany this splendid architectural composition. The building is magnificent, a masterpiece of the Raj era. The image is nicely lit and has good colours and detail. Use of the wide angle lens has resulted in some distortion of perspective, but without it you would not have been able to encompass so much of the wonderful architecture and offer a balanced composition.

Good details and excellent PoV. The vastness of the building is well captured.

Stately, spacious and grand. They hit the nail on the head with this design, it has to be one of the buildings in the world I want to see so much one day. To be honest, it was here on TE that I first learned of this place, and since then, I always smile when I see this grandeur. The dome reminds me quite a lot of that of St Pauls in London.
To have this perfect blue sky as a contrast to the white glowing architecture is just beautiful. Lovely moment captured, thanks as always for sharing.
All the best

un magnifico cielo sovrasta questa imponente costruzione, ottimo il pov, in questo modo riusciamo a vederlo in tutta la sua grandezza.
Ottima qualità e bei colori, forse un po' saturi, ma il risultato è ottimo.

The tight frame is putting the mémorial in evidence. The point of view is showing with precision the details and colors of the architecture of the Victoria Mémorial. I am wondering how you got a sky so blue?. There is a good contrast between the colors of the picture. Have a nice day.
