This is my first photo taken in India enroute to New Delhi city centre from Indra Gandhi Airport. It was a fleeting moment shot from inside my taxi during a brief stop at a congested traffic junction. I've got a great cultural shock, you would see beggars going from car to car begging for money. This was a grab shot so there's no real time to think about manual settings -my usual preferred mode- camera quickly preset to aperture priority full opened at f2.8. Point, focus and shoot when she approached the open window. I trusted the camera to get the exposure about right which I think it has just about managed.
I know that, this human experience looks sensitive and ugly perhaps, it's not my intention to offend anyone but it's the reality of human episode and just a daily life.
There are glimpses of determination in the partially hidden face and the desire to survive that interest me....

Superb close up to this praying woman. A good start for your Indian series.

Hello dear Abmdsudi
A quick shot, but I doubt if it could have been better.
Depth of focus and sharpness on the hands (the skin textures, the glimpses of light at the top of the fingers...) are just perfect. I also like the overexposed background, which isolates the subject, and the colour pattern with lots of white and yellow. Impressive picture, I'm looking forward to more.

excellent portrait photo, that documents the real life in India.Sad to see so many people suffering poverty.Well framed from inside a taxi.Intuitive shot, but perfectly executed.I like also the overexposed background, which in this case emphasis more the main subject, namely the woman.
Have a nice weekend

a very daring and successful capture of an expression we all (or should I speak only for myself?) have seen only fleetingly because it's hard to bear and try to avoid it. Even if I encounter it only briefly it sticks to my mind. Here we have the chance to study the begging eyes and hands for as long as we can. Your picture is very strong and has amazing sharpness and sense of depth. The hands are placed between the lady and the viewer in an outstanding way. We are really sharing your experience here. Well done and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

Je trouve cette scéne touchante, son regard doux, sympathique, la netteté des mains sur un léger flouté du visage, belle réalisation

Unfortunately I recognize this moment all too well. It is a painful experience, sitting in a taxi at a red light, unable to get away, unable to ignore the beggars' misery, unable to hand out money through the window at every stop. The focus on the woman's hands is perfect, because that gesture is the all important matter. In the background, slightly blurred, we see her attempt at some kind of smile. Maybe the burned sky could be regarded as a technical fault, but I think this photo is technically brilliant, especially considering the circumstances you have described. We see her hand and her face. That's it. Nothing to distract us, just like you were caught in the taxi at that monemt.

Oh yes, very common situation from the airport to the hotel or whatever, at any red light stop in Delhi
Excellent focus on the joined hands
maybe I'd have included a piece of the car widow to make clear where the action was shot
Have a nice WE, cheers

Really well done on this, and a fleeting shot? I could not imagine better if you had all the time in the world to choose your settings, this is perfect. Th look on the womans face is indeed very emotional, with the tears on her eyes, I feel I am here too, and feel to urge to try to help, knowing as I do that its impossible to help everyone. What I particularly like though is that the focus has gone to her hands like this, drawing a huge amound of detail in her sking and nails, and focusing the mind not on the womans pleading, but on the symbol of prayer, something universal that we all can understand at a glance. That for me makes this wonderful, thank you.
All the best

The shot is perfect. I don't want to focus on the quality part because is simply very good.
The emotions I see on her face and in her eyes are so stunning and for me it's really unique post. Thank you!

Salam Abmdsudi. Why feel compassion when this individual deserves her lot because of her previous life and her karma? Why feel guilty in my comparative wealth when I got what I deserve because of my previous existence? We all got what we merit because of karma. So I can walk away without raising a finger to help her and her children. Let her keep her place and I shall keep mine. If she accepts her fate, in the next reincarnation she will be rewarded.Doesn't that make sense?
And so we use religion to justify anything even our greed and indifference. A confronting and powerful result from a master photographer. Salam. Klaudio.

If this is how you're starting this series, Abmdsudi, I can't wait to watch it unfold. This is a beautiful, beautiful shot, and one that's going right into the favorites. What outstanding detail you've captured in this woman's old weathered hands; that alone would be cause for celebration. But it's her expression - so kind and warm, but a hint of desperation as well - behind them that makes this shot so stunning and full of faith and beauty. You've gone far beyond capturing a moment to capturing an emotion. That you did this on the fly only further speaks to your skill. Thanks very much for this one.

You're capturing well this portrait by good composition and good focus, so it's impressive to see the spectacle in which she is praying with her hands joined and begging for the hand. The manners to which it prays with its hands joined may be the habits of a Buddhist country. It's impressive in her brown hand and yellow shawl, too. Although it is hard to face reality community squarely, the whole surface of the shadow of a world is caught well.

another amazing portrait and scene. Good shot and caught moment. Pity that face is unsharp when you used f/2.8.
Have a nice WE.

very powerfull picture, well focus on the praying hand, but we also can see the sad eyes. I would have cut the right part to remove the black window frame.

Voilà un portrait dressé avec maestria et talent. La réussite est manifeste. Le cadrage finement réalisé permet de jouer avec les mains jointes et le regard sur l'arrière-plan.

Very nice documentation of the daily life of people. By not showing the complete face, with great focus on the praying hands, this person could represents all of humanity. Good lighting and good use of the dof. Well done, tfs.

Hi abmdsudi My noble friend.
Lovely capture of this woman's hands suffered. Clarity and lighting was well done.
Thanks for an honest and constructive criticism for my post today.

Here is a very strong image that expresses many things. In Occident we would easily tend to forget that there is so much poverty and suffering in the world.Difficult to remain insensitive to that look which tell us about their living conditions and the position of these hands that beg you to make a small gesture of generosity.
Still a great picture.

This is a wonderful first shot. In this woman we can see a lot of emotions. You have done an excellent focus on hands. A different image and very imressive.
Have a nice Monday.

First off, I think this is a very well-achieved grab-shot, which does indeed tell us something important, if not altogether pleasant about life in this modern city (of course we get beggars in London). It strikes me as a serious documentary image.
But I'm also worried by the alternative "reading": that this kind of photograph is voyeuristic, and perhaps intrusive into the lives of others. I'm re-reading Susan Sontag "On Photography" at the moment. She claims, somewhat contentiously, "essentially the camera makes everyone a tourist in other people's reality, and eventually in one's own."
I'd be intrigued to hear your reaction to that kind of reading; also I'd really like to know if you wound the window down and spoke to her...
Technically, aesthetically, and I hope morally, this is a successful photograph.
mirosu (16273) 2012-11-19 3:18
The close crop, soft lighting and dark colors give this portrait an interesting feel. It seems as if there is no-one in the universe except this begging woman and the viewer. The light in the praying hands is magical and shallower DOF separates the hands nicely from the face. Really top class work with exquisite detailing where it counts. Have a great week.

Hello dear Abmdsudi,
The contours of the hands of the lady seem to be talking.Amazing presence of mind and great sense of photography reflected here. You deserve a double smiley for this artistic presentation.Great efforts.TFS

Without your note, I would have thought that you had carefully planned and crafted this shot. This moment in time is perfectly captured, and it goes to show that some of the best pictures happen spontaneously, and when you least expect it. Great light management, especially the highlights around her fingertips. Direct eye contact, yet hidden face, speaking more than words can do justice.
adores (46357) 2012-11-24 15:57
I had missed this one! Unfortunately, a very common scene in the big cities of India and even in many other countries! Even working fast, you managed to get a very good shot!I like the way you put the focus on her hands. A photo so full of meaning!
