Photographer’s Note

Basgo is a World Heritage site west of Leh, Ladakh. The 400 year-old mud brick gompa and 500 year-old citadel, which are mostly in ruins, are reached by a precarious winding track, and when I was there were in the midst of extensive restoration. The Serzang Temple houses an enormous gold and copper Maitreya(future Buddha) statue. This photo is cropped from one depicting the entire statue, with which I was not happy. In the small temple it was difficult to get a decent photo. However, it was an amazing place to sit and contemplate this magnificent statue situated where it was in such an isolated environment.
