Photographer’s Note
We met this boy in the beautiful town of Phalodi.
He had a lovely smile and was very interested in the strange
people that came to visit his town.
I heard different explanations for the black coaled eyes (against insects,
To protect against the evil, for beauty,…..).
Who knows s the real meaning?
Thanks to Gautam I've got the answer: This is called kajal [ pronounced as ka jl ]. Yes it is to ward off evil spirits. To protect from other peoples envy.

hello Ingrid,
absolutely beautiful portrait. It is so sharp I feel I want to reach out and touch the child's hair.
best wishes
