La « Camel Mela » de Pushkar au Rajasthan qui se tient chaque année fin octobre n’est pas seulement une foire aux chameaux et plus généralement aux animaux, chevaux, chèvres et bovins. C’est aussi une fête religieuse
La légende dit que les dieux lachèrent un cygne avec un lotus dans le bec. Il devait laisser tomber ce lotus à l'endroit où Brahma devait procéder à un yagna (rituel hindou). C'est à Pushkar qu'il fit tomber ce lotus. C'est pourquoi Pushkar est l'un des rares lieux en Inde où est consacré un temple au dieu Brahmâ. Une célébration de cet évenement a lieu à Kartik Poomina, le jour de pleine lune du mois Kartik (Nov-Déc) du calendrier Hindu. Ce jour et ceux qui précèdent voient affluer des milliers de pélerins qui convergent vers le temple à Brahmâ pour y prier et y faire des offrandes, ainsi que pour prendre des bains rituels dans le lac sacré.
A cette période, nombreuses sont les festivités organisées en marge de l’évènement. Les bateleurs, forains, artistes, petits métiers de toutes sortes …. s’affairent à proximité du champ de foire. La fête foraine elle aussi bat son plein et on s’y donne à cœur-joie même si les manèges et attractions ne sont pas de la dernière mode et de la technologie high-tech la plus récente

The "Camel Mela" of pushkar in Rajasthan which occurs every year at the end of October is not only a fair for camels and more generallu animals such as horses, goats or bovines.
It is also a religious event. According to Padma Purana, the Hindu religious text, Lord Brahma was in search of a suitable place for a Vedic yagna. While contemplating, a lotus fell down from his hand on the earth and water spurted from three places. One of them was Pushkar and Brahma decided to perform his yagna over here. A celebration of this event is performed on the day Kartik Poornima on the full moon day (the 15th) of Kartik (November-December) in Hindu calendar. On this day thousands of pilgrims converge at the Brahma temple at Pushkar to offer prayers and bathe in the holy Pushkar lake.
At this period, the festivities organized aside of the main event are plenty. Jugglers, artists, stallkeepers, crafts of all kinds .... are busy in the vicinity of the fair ground. The funfair is also very active and many come there and enjoy, even if the shows and roundabouts are not at the most recent fashion
