Dans l’hindouisme, Ganesh, Ganesha, ou Vinayak ou souvent appelé Ganapati dans le sud de l’Inde est le dieu de la sagesse, de l’intelligence, de l’éducation et de la prudence, le patron des écoles et des travailleurs du savoir. C’est le dieu qui lève les obstacles
Son vâhana ou véhicule est un rat ou une souris, Mûshika. Les deux se complètent, l’éléphant massif, puissant et réfléchi, le rat petit, mobile et malicieux, ont ainsi tous les atouts nécessaires pour résoudre les problèmes du monde.
C’est sans aucun doute un des dieux favoris des Indiens, presque un ami auquel on se confie de façon bon enfant. On s’adresse à lui dès qu’il s’agit d’entreprendre une action importante ou à l’aube d’engager sa vie sur un nouveau chemin
Au Rajasthan (et peut-être aussi dans d’autres états), on voit ainsi fréquemment sur les maisons, des représentations de Ganesh et Mûshika. Ce sont des faire-parts de mariage où sont indiqués le nom des futurs époux et la date du mariage. Ceux qui voient cette « publication des bans » sont invités à participer, d’une façon ou d’une autre, à la fête

In Rajasthan (and maybe also in some other indian states), one very often sees representations of both Ganesha and Mûshika painted on the houses. These are wedding cards indicating the name of the family and the date of the wedding. Everyone seeing this proclamation post is invited to participate, one way or another, to the feast
