It is no unusual sight in Rajasthan to see women performing manual labour and in some cases they perform harder tasks than men. One task which frequently falls to the woman's lot is that of fetching water, this they do by the aid of large handleless metalware bottles and the practice of carrying these heavy pots balanced on the head imparts to the rural women an enviable gracefulness of carriage. Clean water is essential for life but the lack of water means that women and children spend hours each day searching for water and carrying it home few kilometers away. This exhausting task may result in severe pain in their necks and backs over the times in my opinion, but I guess not much can be done in this regard.
In this remote Kanoi semi desert village some 60km west of Jaisalmer, getting enough water is routine daily chores for these women. Those pots of water they will fill and carry back home, will have to be suffice for cooking, drinking, cleaning, bathing and anything else, including watering their goats from which they get critical milk to sell in the marketplace. The whole village is depending on these water-carriers. Life is water and without it there is only dehydration, starvation and sickness.
I have watched these woman with a sense of awe. First of all, try balancing 3-5kg of water on your head, secondly they are not just carrying water up there, they are carrying the lives of those they love. Those women are carrying the whole village up there. The thirsty souls are depending on them to get the water to them. Imagine if the watercarriers, just stay at the well all day, splashing in the water and drinking their fill. Their thirst will be quenched, they will be cooled and refreshed, but those in the village will die in a dry desert land where there is no water.
These women are carriers of Living Water surrounded by thirsty people who live in a weary land...
Shot taken on cool overcast afternoon, hiding away behind some desert bushes using my long lens. Focused on the central figure.

Spontaneously I would have liked to see them from up front, but I realize that could have been difficult and may have disturbed them. There is a point, actually, of showing them from behind, thus illustrating their long walk away from the POV towards a distant village. Their heavy task and their (as always) colourful clothes are equally well shown from any side.
Along with the note this is an important picture, because the increasing scarcity of fresh water is likely to be one of the most serious problems in the world in the upcoming decades, possibly a cause of wars and in any case a lot of human suffering.

I am not sure of the way you have framed, I would have prefered with a little bit more of the women and their saris, because in my opinion, this is not only the way they are carrying the water that is elegant, but also the way they are clothed, even if we can see here the beauty of the colors and of the jewels. This elegance, I have always prefered it seen from the back, as you have done here, and I like this very much.
You have writen also a very beautiful note, full of sensibility.

Hello Abmdsudi, it is true women in India are very heavy worker, building roads, working the fields, build palaces and more involved to take care of children and family, are very strong women accustomed to suffering and fatigue, excellent reportage, well taken with beautiful colors and lovely light, very deep note, warm regards, Valter

This is quite a Rajastan capture, so typical are the women carrying water on their heads, but a little bit more of them would have been interesting to watch
Were they walking along the route?
Like the way you blurred the BG

Bom dia Abmdsudi
A real and interesting scene. We can see scenes like this in the countryside of my region. The colors are magnificents. Very well done.

Your note is so perceptive and interesting Abmdsudi and really adds a good commentary to the shot. We see water carriers here in the north of Namibia, again it's women and children who do the carrying. The government has 'water-posts' dotted around for communities with no amenities, the majority of which are hand pumps. I love this shot for it's colourfulness and detail. The central lady hos wearing the most amazing bangles. Very good DL shot. Best regards rosemary

Earlier they had this jugs from plastic, now these metal ones look better and also for environment are much better. For me it is always amazing how the women from East carry the loads on heads.. Excellent colourful composition, interesting note.
We in the West do not realize how hard the life is when the water is scarse.
Have a nice weekend

My best regards.

nice the snapshot with the three colourful women to carry on their heads the 'source' of the life, the water.I like your presentation there with the shot to showing the daily life of this native women.

The water containers here certainly very eye-catching and they also provide interesting elements in this great capture. Colourful women struggling with this water collecting task is a very good theme in this excellent TE contribution. A good photo and a valuable picture!

Bien vu.
Félicitations!... et bonne fin de semaine,

I actually like pictures from behind, they have a particular feel, which is present here! Good documentation showing how women have to get the household's water...

I'd always like the elegant way these Indian women are walking while they are carrying water... Their clothes are also very colourful, a pleasure for the eye, and here you've spotted very well the lady with her attractive white bangles. The blurred BG made the subjects standing out perfectly!

Lively daily life photo, good capture to a group of women that walking together, a view that full with harmonious feel, clear to show the typical aluminium pots that use by local people, interesting composition, thanks for sharing.

You caught very well the scene. You have been blessed for the colors, with the veils of different colors that compose a nice patchwork against the green background, and also, by the fact that the lady in the middle kept her arms up, which allows us to admire the incredible amount of bangles she wears. A typical scene, emblematic of the charm of the rural life. The pep of colors splashes on us!

Nice picture and notes, I like this kind of daily life scene. Excellent sharpness and colors enhanced by the green bokeh. I remember having seen such women in a village near Jaisalmer and stopping the car to take a picture. The shiny metal jar, the colored sari, the bracelets make a beautiful composition.
Charo (51210) 2012-01-11 12:31
I really like your composition highlighting the vessels above the head of the women, who certainly know how to take much elegance and balance.

I agree with some of the comments below in that I would have also liked to see the ladies faces.. however your note depicts their actions and not their beauty.. an amazing task and ability to carry water on their heads.. -- good note.. well done Rich
jlbrthnn (79791) 2012-01-12 6:10
It's a repetitive task, daily, that these women do with great dedication and philosophy, conscious of their great responsibility in the life of the village. The picture is outstanding and dramatic, and also with beautiful colors and metallic luster. Beautiful portrait on the net nicely blurred background. Bravo.
Have a nice day

Great representation of the strength of the hardworking women all over the world and all over history. As to the picture itself, the colors of the costumes are great, and the background blurring very effective. Congratulations!

This is a lovely rural shot showing these women carrying the water pitcher back to their village. The colors of their sarees are very vibrant and make a nice contrast against the silver pots. This gives an idea how these village women work hard to keep up the family.

It has been a while and nice to visit your beautiful gallery again. You have captured the colors and details beautifully of this routine in Rajasthan. I like the shallow focus and tight framing in keeping the image pops in the frame.
Thank you and have a nice day.

Hello dear Abmdsudi
Such a unique Point of View, beautifully composed with colours that just jump out of the screen at me. The definition is impressive and I like how the 3 ladies are turned away from us, adding to the exoticism of this exotic ocunry.

Good to see you back! We miss your posts when you are away!
This is a good one taken with the long end of the zoom, with precise composition & also highlighting the colours. The DOF thanks to the zoom also make them stand out against the BG. I liked the reflection on the left water container...a small bit but enough to be attractive a feature!
faubry (35405) 2012-03-14 3:21
Very amazing picture with warm colors, i like this composition with only heads, very well capted;
i am very happy to read your comment at my photos, thanks a lot
have a good journey
Waylim (25160) 2012-03-14 17:41
Beautiful colors you got here. The tight crop and POV really bring us up close to the ladies as if we are walking behind them. Excellent portray of the way of life in India as the women carries such heavy load on their head and they have such great balance walking without holding. I guess it take training and persistence.
I wanted to say the vertical format also would be nice, but I know you are not all comfortable with it. But you should try. If these women can carries water on their head you can take picture on a vertical format :)
Just lovely. My complements and admiration.
divail (8288) 2012-03-17 19:39
jmdias (52918) 2012-04-06 11:01
very interesting the shapes of the water deposits and the colors of these clothes. nice compo, full of beauty and meaning.

I seem to have missed many great shots of yours. This very striking image is just one of them. Terrific scene. Water is the source of life, yet it is hard work too. At least, for some it is!
maloutim (9629) 2012-08-14 18:04
Same picture but in an excellent close-up !
The shining metal and the bright clothes come out very well against the blurred greenery.
I feel for the lady on the left who is brave to carry two containers !
I also notice the many bracelets all along their arms. I wonder if they are only decorative or if they also serve a purpose.
Congratulations for this great capture.
ourania (27096) 2012-11-27 13:53
a magnificent picture, a simple composition enriched by the superb elegance of these strong and generous women. I love the depth and the colours, the way the carriers and their pots are outlined and defined against the blurry woods ahead of them. It's wonderful how you've managed to capture their culture, daily life and destiny in such a simple shot from great distance. Framing and lighting are marvellous. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

Hello Abmdsudi, typical colors, beautiful colors, bright colors, colors from India!
It only take a good photographer to capture a great detailed scene like this!
Great traditional detail of the tin pots and of course the unique Indian fabrics and the ladie's elegant accessories!
A beautiful picture!
