The "Pink City Express" is a train going between Delhi and Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan state. At least there was such a train in 1977, when this picture was taken. I think this "rickshaw wallah" would not mind that I use that name for his vehicle being pedalled down a street in the old central part of Jaipur.
Why Jaipur is called "The Pink City" should be obvious. The pink buildings, generally from the late 18th century, have made Jaipur one of the most popular destinations for tourists in India.
I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide. Here is a larger version.

I love the motion in this picture, it's so fluid, well spread across the frame and captivating. The buildings with their unique architecture and colours are very attractive and interesting. Foreground and background offer a rich and delightful daily life spectacle. The dynamism of the perspective and the movement, the brightness of the light and the colours, the character of the people and the passenger's look to your lens make this timeless photo a strong experience for the viewer. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

ps. Kl 1400 passar utmärkt i morgon på samma plats:)

Fine picture of the pink city and this street would probably be the same even today with perhaps a little more crowd. Cycle rickshaws still ply and the Pink City Express still runs between Delhi and Jaipur. Charming daily life shot excellently composed with the vividly coloured buildings in great contrast against the blue sky.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice evening.

This is really how I remember Jaipur with the bicycles, the cycle rickshaws, the colourfully dressed ladies and of course with the pink buildings. I really like this lively but not overly busy street scene.
As a passenger, I've used a lot those bicycle rickshaws in Jaipur. From that position, you have sufficient time to absorb quietly everything what's going on in the streets.
I remember when looking up I often saw monkeys on the roofs. And I also recall the dromedaries used for the transportation of goods.
The tree with its lush green foliage is placed well between the pink facades.
It's clear that there was still only little motorized traffic then. Good for the visitors.
Best regards, Paul

Hello dear Gert,
Each of those pink buildings are for themselves unique modern art objects if not in Indıa but somewhere in US and under protection !
TFS and best regards

It hasn't changed much in Jaipur when I was there four years ago. Maybe there are more motorbikes and sometimes you can see elephants on the streets and monkeys on the roofs.
This rickshaw reminds me how I compromised myself. I went a whole day with Pixelterror and in the evening I invited him for tea to our hotel. As I have never went by small horse cab, similar to rickshaw, we took it and I told the driver that the hotel was near Ajmer Street. we went and went and couldn't find the hotel. The driver became a bit angry and said it was the end of town. So I took the visit card and... it was near Amber Street, quite opposite end of town. What a shame.
Nice view. The women in saree, beautiful architecture, and blue sky.
In WS later view of probably the same street nad train - I am not sure if it was PInk Express.

Excellent documentary photograph, made all the more interesting by its age. I'm very pleased that you're posting such a rich range of imagery from your archive, and you've inspired me to dig down deeper than I usually do! I wonder what changes you would see if you took the same shot now.
Kamilutka (8107) 2014-03-17 14:36
I like the double meaning of your title which refers both to the architecture and the vehicle. The street scene is full of interesting details and it can be easily discovered step by step for a long time. The orange buildings create very pretty settings for the people passing by either walking or cycling. Nice colors and light.
Thanks for sharing

una foto molto interessante, anche molto vecchia, i colori hanno tenuto bene, c'è un bel cielo e ....poche auto.

Hi Gert, this is one of your best pic from your archive talking about the quality, truly perfect and showing us the daily life on the streets and spectacular old facades in background, very very well done!Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano
jcpix (13930) 2014-03-17 20:18
On my monitor the buildings looks to be more of a deeper salmon color, which is inconsequential, because it's easily understood why this would be called "The Pink City." :)
I can't stress it enough, I love these old prints of yours, taking us back in time with such nostalgia. Scan quality is great, what's your secret...it makes me want to revive many of my older slides.
Amsterdam must have taken a cue from here, looks like bikes are the way to get around. Bright and lively, this is a wonderful depiction of the daily life...full of color and atmosphere. Thanks for continuing to share these with us. enjoy the new day. All the best.

Great old shot from Jaipur.I had planned to go there next week, but could not get leave for my tour due to General Elections.Very well captured.TFS.
kasianowak (8925) 2014-03-18 1:16
Yes, I completely understand how this place acquired its nickname... :)
Lovely street scene from years ago. It probably looks different now. I saw Delhi in 2012 - the rickshaws were still around and lots of bicycles with loads bigger than the vehicle and driver taken together but also many cars and motorbikes.
I heard that rickshaws are going to be or have just been banned somewhere in India. It will certainly change to feel of the place.

En fridfull gatubild, inte alls den trängsel man gärna förknippar med detta land. Fina färger, både på husen och omgivningen.
subhendu_bagchi (26089) 2014-03-18 2:22
a nice street scene from the pink city. A nice capture which tells how was it at 37years ago. Beautiful composed with nice depth and clarity. Another excellent scanned image. Tfs.
Royaldevon (38896) 2014-03-18 4:17
Oh, what a city view!
Not a single car in sight!
How amazing to hear only the tinkle of bells rather than the hoot of cars!
This is a delightful shot and definitely one to demonstrate how things have changed. The angle uses the road as a natural guide, left to right, across the scene with many daily life details to interest and detain us.
My warm regards,

This is a fantastic DL shot from Jaipur taken so long ago. Excellent image quality, I scrolled down to the Date taken to be sure it was really old. Good placement of the express in the frame, it is not entering nor leaving the frame and helps to arrest the viewer's gaze to the beautiful pink buildings in the BG. Thanks to your share I get to see such old photos from an Indian city. And that Pink city Express is still running!

I remember my experience of travelling between the cities in India. But some expert have told me about the local trains and I have took a sleeper (it seems me were Volvo or Scania). Anyway the photo is great, excellent scanned register, just a mute witness of that times. Good saturation, fine details! Kodak was the best, just a king of films.

Amazing busyness daily street scene and what a beautiful composition with those bikes, ricksha and the colourful people being part of the show. Lots of interests and details to pick out with splashing bright pink color in the background help to settle the eye. A slice of street life timely captured, great light and colour contrast making this an intriguing capture with its own charm. Excellent shot, tfs.
eldancer1 (36343) 2014-03-19 7:37
Very environmental friendly form of transportation and good exercise for the person. Too bad that most of the undeveloped countries don't have strict pollution control, we are destroying the earth. Good pov and nice details. Well done, tfs.

Ciao e buona serata

Hi Gert, Nice daily city life capture moment with all these original transportation. The red buildings give nice colour contrast to the tree. The beautiful blue sky gives a nice BG. Best regards
macjake (67814) 2014-03-19 16:27
i know you mentioned this pink city, but the place i want to see the most in India is the Blue city!
Image all the people photos!! Same here too.
India is WAY up on my travel list, but i have to admit it kinda scares me a bit - not quite sure how to get around from city to city as the transportation system is poor and i KNOW i'll be taken advantage of financially at every possibility - but i suppose thats part of the journey too.
here the city looks more orangey than pink :)
but very photogentic nonetheless.
that large tree fits nicely in the middle too.
another fun oldie
kato (11630) 2014-03-19 18:56
You're capturing well this place by a good composition and very excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see a row of pink building which stands along the street and bicycle rickshaw. It's attractive and tasteful for pink buildings because of the design in old ages and unique color. The whole is harmonized well by a good arrangement and beautiful color combination. So, you catch well the atmosphere of India by showing the building, their clothes and vehicles etc.
Kielia (24077) 2014-03-20 9:39
you are presenting a wonderful impression of this well known city. The perspective is excellent and the composition is successful. I really like the pink colors (your scan is outstanding) and the details. My compliments!

interesting and well capture daily-life scene from Jaipur.Taken in 1977,but I´m curious if it would be much different if you took it nowadays.
The scene seems to be immortalized in perfect moment convey its expression.
Also quality is better, than we often seen on pictures taken on the newest digital cameras.
Tigerlily (3379) 2014-04-17 9:06
Strangely, I thought it was digital photo when I saw the sky colour... it's very light. Beautiful color and wonderful detail. Interesting buildings..I can't see many windows... Thanks Gert.

Ops, taken sol long ago, so few traffic and only bikes,
nowadays lot of cars and also the yellow rickshaws where I happily take while being there
Charming and eye catching color of this indian city where I like also the white drawings on the walls
Great daily life scene, plenty of movement, women walking, men riding bikes
Do you noticed it?
Happy Easter !
mcmtanyel (22706) 2014-04-29 19:32
Pink City or Bike City? I don't believe I see one motorized vehicle. I wonder how it has fared in the intervening years. Outstanding slide and scan, as usual.
ikeharel (71475) 2016-05-21 2:10
"Pink city" buildings in fine contrast to the bright blue sky, and street activity was superbly captured, Gert.
The big tree in the middle is also an element with grandeur to the whole.
Perfect scanning job done, my cong.'s.
Have a nice weekend,
