International Women’s Day

Woman and Liquid of Life:
It is no unusual sight here in Jaipur to see women performing one of their daily chores of fetching enough water, either from wells, rivers or lakes. Water, earth's most precious resource is a vital life-line for humans where getting potable water in this semi desert town can be very difficult and this one particular exhausting back-breaking responsibility always falls to the women who spend hours daily carrying it home few kilometers away under scorching sun. And this is a job that does not let up for even a day. Families need drinking water every day!

I have watched this humble woman from a distant, just the sort of scene that helps bring a greater understanding of the life of others in far away places. A shot of an everyday human landscape as she gave me a tremendous gift, her time and humanity and above all, the opportunity to make a very very special picture.

This profile portrait is just a simple straight-on shot and there's nothing rosy about this fraction of a second snap, but I was so touched by a soulful person fully concentrating on the water faucet at public communal taps ensuring that every precious drop is not wasted from the bucket. This sums up her sheer force of will to just get on with life, sure life is tough but she will get through. May she be a potential contributor in the development of her own family and communities.

Images are more than just scenery to me, they touch our hearts, our minds and project feelings.......

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th each year across the globe. IWD is about celebrating the vital role women play in their families, communities and countries while recognising that significant barriers to achieving women's economic achievement and gender equality continue to exist in the third world countries in particular. At the heart of every human experience is the desire to survive, prosper and to live without fear, hunger or suffering. To imagine how life could be better and then have the means to change it. Yet, everyday millions of people cannot fulfill their most basic needs, let alone attain their dreams or desires.
